Replacing Tires on 2018 337RLS - Original Tires E rated really not rated for 14K GVW
Were needing to replace the tires on our 337RLS and are wondering what ply rating and what brand others have installed. We are thinking E rated tires are really not heavy enough for the 14K GVW of the trailer - Any Thoughts?
Thank you in advance

What is the rating of the axles under your trailer? At full GVWR your axles will likely be carrying close to 6,000 lbs. so you'd be marginal with E-rated LT tires since it's unlikely your load will be equally distributed. You'll probably need to be looking at E-rated ST tires, of which there are lots of selections. G-rated ST tires would be overkill for your application.

Gerald,
Welcome to the forum.
There are several things at play, here. First, the tires do not carry the full 14,000 lbs. GVWR - at full load, about 3,000 lbs. of that weight is on the pin. That said, the E-rated Westlakes do not have a good reputation for staying together and I replaced the ones on our 337 as quickly as I could. I'm on my second set of Sailuns (a set on the Reflection and now a set on the Solitude). However, Sailun started having problems with tread separation after they moved a plant from China to Vietnam. If you go with Sailun, look up the recall dates and make sure that the tires were not manufactured within that date window and/or that they were not made in Vietnam. Another excellent choice would be the Goodyear G614s... but they are crazy expensive right now.
You'll have to check with Lionshead or GD on your wheels. The particular wheels that came on our 2016 337 were rated for pressures and loads above those required for the load range G tires so we did not have to change wheels. I don't know if your trailer came with the same wheels on it. You can call GD with your VIN and find out.
Good luck and safe travels!

As mentioned whats your loaded axle weights? Dry 10,900 and maybe 12,500lbs loaded?
Minus the pin of 2500lbs? That puts 10,000 on the tires. Divide by 4 is 2500lbs on each tire.
E rated GY Marathons in a 235/80/16 are rated at 3420 each. Thats 6840 per side or 1840lbs more than you need.Last edited by goducks14; 04-13-2022 at 11:49 AM.
