    Black tanks

Is it ok to leave the black tanks open all the time?

NO!!! That's a sure-fire way to build the dreaded poop pyramid and clog up the system. Black tanks should have several gallons of fresh water put in them after emptying and allowed to fill up at least 3/4 full before draining and rinsing again. It's also best to leave gray tanks closed until they need draining. This will flush food particles from the tanks and rinse the system and sewer hose after draining the black tank. (Always drain the black tank first, and then the gray(s)).

    What Rob Said!
Once you get that poop pyramid, very difficult to correct, and very messy to correct.

It is literally a pyramid of poo, a large pile right in the center of the black tank.

That happens when the black valve is left open and all the liquid waste drains but the solid doesn’t.

And FYI - it can take a LOT of flushing to get all the bits and pieces out.

This is the part I didn't understand as a newbie. I flushed the black tank until I saw clear water the first time. Then I showed up to a site with hookups and opened the black just for the heck of it and a bunch more yuck came out. That confused me. I now have a multi step black tank flushing method I use that seems to work better, but it's a little time-consuming.

You may not have been level when you flushed the black tank. That happened to me last month.

I flush till it runs clear the close the valve while still flushing. Fill up to half a more , dump again. I do this a few times. You'll be surprised at all the stuff that comes out. But be real careful not to get distracted. I also use a water meter to get sure not to over fill. DW wouldn't be a happy camper if I did.

Amazing how much more comes out on the 2nd or 3rd time. Also filling the toilet bowl and flushing the toilet a few time help break things up also.
