    Oregon Hells Canyon Overlook

    Greetings,

Is NF-39 paved from Halfway to Joseph.
    What about NF-490?
Have you pulled a 35 foot travel trailer through there?

    Hello again,

Please recommend another forum, perhaps one not manufacturer brand specific where I can post this question. With seventy three views and no replies it appears no one has been there. I will write a trip report after we go this summer. If it turns out to be paved, or maybe will will make it a day trip from base camp.

Ken @orbiker is from Oregon and checks in every so often. Maybe Ken will do so and share some feedback.

    Thanks, in advance Ken !

I haven't been on NF-39 or NF-490 in over 5 years. NF-39 is paved, but it has some very steep grades and the pavement was in very bad shape from logging trucks. So if a logging truck can negotiate it, so can a 35ft trailer (slowly). Excellent motorcycle road, but I wouldn't take anything but a ruggedized trailer on it. I have stayed at Wallowa Lake in the past and it is a beautiful area, but plan your route in carefully. My sister and some friends came in from Lewiston/Asotin and the WA129 road is called the "Rattlesnake Grade" for a reason. Her friends towing a 35' trailer and 5th wheel regretted not going to La Grande and coming in OR82 (which is the way they left).

You make a good report and I was assuming as much. I figured the
lack of responses meant trouble so we planned the trip to stay
near Baker. We will make day trips from base camp to the Hells
Canyon Overlook one day and the Jet Boat the next day. Will see
how far we can make it up 39 in only the truck. Would like to
make it to Joseph for the turn around. Will write later this
    fall when we get back.

    Thanks,

You won't have any trouble with a truck. The overlook is only about 3 miles on NF-490 off of NF-39. Hell's Canyon Overlook You can't see the Snake River from the overlook, but you get a commanding view of the scale of the canyon. You can see the river from the Hat Point Overlook, but that's a lot longer drive on gravel (https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/wall...a/?recid=51929). Joseph, Enterprise and Wallowa Lake are all great places to visit. Art walk/metal sculptures in Joseph (https://josephoregon.com/), Terminal Gravity Brewing and other eateries in Enterprise (https://terminalgravitybrewing.com/).

In short, do not take a trailer on this road.

We drove from Halfway to Joseph and back for one of our day
trips. Although it is all paved... there are many blind, hairpin
turns. Even if the trailer was only 20 feet long, you will cross
over into the oncoming lane completely closing off access to
those in the oncoming lane. There were 4 motorcycles one way and
8 the other, you would kill somebody. There are many cars and
trucks too, dont know if you die head on to another truck.

Do take the Hells Canyon Adventures jet boat, it was a hoot.
Dusty and Hannah were outstanding guides!
