Proper place to jack our Solitude

I am trying to find a bottle jack to keep with us on trips due to all of the recent brake troubles we have had and fear of axle seal going bad on a trip. I am wanting to know the proper place to set a jack to lift our wheels off the ground. I have heard so many conflicting locations, (under the axles, under the frame 1 foot from tire to be lifted, etc.) I would like to hear where everyone is putting their jack? Also was thinking I will probably need a taller heavy duty 20T hydraulic one I have seen recently. I doubt the typical low profile bottle jacks can lift a 5er tall enough to remove a tire.

    Thanks in advance.

I have always used a 12-ton bottle jack placed under the frame about 6" from the tire to be changed. The jack is compact so it is placed on a 6 x 6 x 10 across two 4 x 4 x 12 which puts the jack head very close to the frame. Never had a problem lifting the tire high enough to change it.

    Hi Marvin,

Great "real world" input on how to do what the manufacturer suggests.
Do you do this with the trailer hitched to the truck and landing gear up ?
I am trying to picture how this would work for a forward tire if the RV is sitting on its landing gear.
It seems to me that this would overload the opposite side landing leg . . .

    Hi Rob,
I always change tires with the camper hitched to the truck and landing gear up. You are correct, it would overstress the opposing gear strut. Last week I upgraded the 15" Westlake tires to 16" BF Goodrich Commercial TA tires with new wheels and the guy at Discount Tire had to use my blocks for his air jack (they started to jack it up on the axle until I stopped them), all done one at a time with the camper hitched to the truck.

    Hi Marvin & Marion (@Sirsea),

Always place jack under the frame. The procedure you have listed above is exactly correct.

    Best regards,
