    Hot water heater

When do you know it’s safe to turn on the hot water heater?

Open the relief valve on the top. If you have water running out turn it on

Not sure I understand your question. If its a tanked h/w, just make sure there's water in it and all of the air is out. If it's a on-demand, just be sure that the outside temp is above freezing.

That’s my question, how do you know there’s water in it (it’s tanked) Sounds like I should hook up the water, release air (open faucets, etc.) then check relief valve… is it necessary to check the relief valve, is that a best practice?

I never have. When I hook up the city water I turn on the sink faucet and move it to the hot side. When water comes out I turn on the water heater. I do not drain my water heater. I travel and camp in freezing conditions. The one time I opened the relief valve it started to leak and I had to replace it.

Welcome to the forum! A few forum tips:

    1) If you use "Reply With Quote" (to the right of "Reply") as I have here, folks will know to whom you are responding and that person will get a notification.

    2) You can also tag folks using the "@" symbol and their user name (as I have done yours) - they'll also get a notification that way.

    3) You can create a signature block with your RV and tow vehicle information (see mine below). That way you won't have to repeat that information whenever you post or ask a question - and others won't have to ask. You can create a signature by going to:

Forum Actions (on menu bar) -> Edit Profile -> Edit Signature (under My Settings on the left)

    First, welcome to the forums.

Second, others have given you good information. I do not open the relief valve. The one thing I would add is make sure your water heater is NOT bypassed (typically from winterizing it). This is typically only an issue the first time you use the trailer after it has been winterized. You want to make sure there is water in the tank before tuning on the heater to keep from bunning out the heating element (only take a few seconds to bun out).
