We did that route going west last fall. I remember heavy traffic - as one would expect around a city the size of OKC - but nothing out of the ordinary. We transited and were out of the area heading toward Amarillo without any delays.

We went through there last year on our way out west also. As I recall, we were passing through there around 11:30 to 12 noon on a Friday and didn't experience anything unusual, just what I would consider normal traffic for a fairly large city. My biggest mistake that day was in planning.....Checotah, OK all the way to Tucumcari, NM, approx 480 miles. Needless to say, it was a very long day, and I will not do that again.

Forgot to mention... a trick I sometimes use on the actual travel day is to go to Google Maps and type in, for example, "Oklahoma City Traffic." Maps will display the whole OKC area with the color coding for traffic flow and icons for accidents, etc.

I don't find OKC traffic nearly as bad as other towns of similar size. For east/west on I40 one solution is to take the I240 bypass around the south side of town. Keeps you out on the downtown area, and if you look at map it's not really that many more miles.
