This is why we went with 2400. Basically the same trailer just better suited to a 1/2 ton
It sounds like your hitch isn’t set up properly either if it is difficult to drive
Why the need to go so fast btw?
Don’t think he was saying it was difficult to drive, just bad gas mileage. Much has to do with the type of towing, mountain or flat and of course How loaded the truck and trailer are.

Looking for real world mpg towing the 2800 at 65-70 mpg

Our 2021 chevy 6.2 gasser mileage is appalling.. 5-8 mpg at 65/70
We just did a 8,000 mile trip with our 2020 GMC 2500HD Duramax Denali pulling our 303RLS fifth wheel which weighs about 6 ton. We ran slightly over speed limits except for Montana and Wyoming where limit was 80 MPH. Ran at about 72 mph there. Includes a fair bit of mountain driving in western Canada and USA. Our average fuel economy on the whole trip was just under 12 MPG.

How much do you drive towing?

Edit. 5-8 is a huge range btw. Which is it?
We never travel over 63mph and get great fuel mileage considering I am hauling a brick with my 5.3

Keep in mind the faster you go the fuel mpg drops drastically
It’s less than 10K to upgrade to the diesel, not 20K. You also get a significant increase in engine torque over the gas engine. Makes a big difference when going up a hill or mountain.

A gmc pro with the gas is 65000, the pro with the duramax is 79000. So okay my bad. 14k difference
Also though there will be trade in losses so I stand by what I said
But the OP in the original post was just concerned about economics not power

According to GMC.ca, the 2022 GMC 2500HD pro with gas engine is $67,103. The same truck with the diesel is $73,648. These prices are Canadian funds. That works out to $11,545 difference at retail list price. For this money you get almost twice as much torque, much better fuel economy plus excellent resale value.

But he has a 1/2 ton. I almost guarantee it will be 20 k to trade to an HD easily plus I was pricing 3500 because getting a 3/4 ton isn’t smart IMO
But like I said my comment came before he was talking about handling issues It was only a thread about economics and my opinion stands that unless you are towing consistently diesel doesn’t add up

I get the same crappy gas mileage pulling a 2400bh with a 3/4 ton gasser. Personally its my daily driver so I didn't wanna fork over the extra 10K for the diesel. I can buy lots of gas for that same 10K lol. Like others have said, towing full time or very often, go for the diesel! Both are very capable trucks! Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy camping!!!!!

I don't know where you are getting 14K from. I paid less than 10K.
The truck in my signature is my third diesel.. And there will be no loss when it is time to sell. My vehicle cost of ownership has stayed consistent from 2001 to date. About 4K a year.
A Gasser with 150K on the clock is considered worn out. A diesel with 150K is considered broke in. Used diesels sell fast for good money. The only downside is the price of admission. Once you pay that, it is easy to stay in a diesel. And if the day ever comes that I want to go back to gas (not likely) I will do VERY well.
