A Gasser with 150K on the clock is considered worn out. A diesel with 150K is considered broke in. Used diesels sell fast for good money. The only downside is the price of admission. Once you pay that, it is easy to stay in a diesel. And if the day ever comes that I want to go back to gas (not likely) I will do VERY well.
Yeah on a 2020. Try that today. Dealers are charging over msrp plus I am in Canada not the USA

Canada is all you gotta say. You guys pay more for everything.
As for todays pricing... This is an aberation. It won't last. And there are a few dealers not taking advantage of it.

Assuming the OP is in the USA, Chevrolet.com Build/Price website currently shows this for an LTZ trim:

2022 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ Crew Cab 4WD Standard Bed
    6.6L V8 Gas, 6-Speed, $58,895*
    6.6L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel, 10-speed Allison, $68,785*

    * MSRP excludes tax, title, license, dealer fees and optional equipment. See dealer for details.

I’m well aware “some/a lot” of dealers are asking more than MSRP these days, but this gives a buyer a starting point for comparing gas vs diesel if buying new.

I can offer numbers. My 2013 Suburban 2500 got 7.2mpg with the 6.0L gas pulling a 2500RL at 67-68mph. It was slightly lower or higher depending on winds. Note the suburban had a 39 gallon tank so range anxiety wasn’t an issue but I totally understand how that would feel with the OPs 26 gallon tank.

My 2018 F-250 with a 6.7L and 35” AT tires averages 10.5 and I tow at 69-70mph now. Combined with a 34 gallon tank it has excellent range. I suspect a GM or a new Ford with the 10 spd would get about 12mpg with my trailer and stock tires.

I will also say the part that the OP wants to hear, the diesel never downshifts, once it’s in 6th on the highway it never shifts. Our 6.0L cruised at 2300rpm and wanted to be at 3100-3200 rpm with a headwind or slight hill, a big hill and it wanted to be at 4100rpm and you couldn’t have decent conversation. It was an older 2013, I’m sure the newer ones are quieter. The diesel will pull the trailer at 1200-1600rpm and it’s silent.

With that said, modern diesels and their emissions have become a lot more reliable in the last 5 years, but they still don’t like running errands or idling, they need to be worked to stay clean. If I was gonna DD a heavy duty truck I would by a gas one, preferably the Ford 7.3L. Or the GM truck once the 10spd is available.

I want to be done with this conversation
    The OP doesn’t have a 2500
He has a 1500. The jump to a duramax is almost what I said
You are comparing two 3/4 tons and someone just walking in to a dealership

Where did OP say they had the 1500? Tongue weight on those 2800's are over 1000lbs, not what is stated in any brochure for them.

Edit...I did a google on the 6.2 engine. Ya, thats a 1500, my bad. The 2800 would be too much IMO. But by towing capacity specs its in the range. My diesel is older than what you are looking for i am sure but it does make a huge difference in towing going from a 6.0 gasser I had.

Reason for post was to see how big or small an increase in mpg would be between hypothetical 1/2 ton gas to 3/4 ton duramax.

Fuel savings and price are not 1st priority. Rather would like to see what to expect as part of this decision. The comfort factor and very very small fuel range are largely driving this decision, along with some really long mile trips planned. Seems like the 1/2 ton is the wrong tool for the job when using travel trailer once a month or so, with some few thousand mile trips thrown in twice a year.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the thread got derailed early on bringing up costs to upgrade and fuel costs which was not what you asked for.

    MillyG,

I think you will be very pleased if you decide to go with a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel. Very stable and capable platforms in all of the modern trucks today. You are asking all the right questions!

I don't think a diesel is the end all be all of towing. Especially with the new 10 speed transmissions. My father in law has a 2021 gmc 3500 diesel that he tows a 35' 5th wheel with. Gets 11.5 mpg towing. I've got a 2022 f350 with the 7.3 gas. I tow a 33' 5th wheel and get 10.5. We go on many trips together through mountains of vt and nh. My truck never drops below 6th gear and never over 3200 rpms. My father in laws truck has been in the shop 3 times for Def related issues that put the truck in limp mode. The last time it was at the dealer for 3 1/2 months. I get 13.7 mpg hand calculated around town. Today I drove almost 200 miles of highway and calculated 16.5. Cruise set at 74. It will take a lot of miles to make up the $9k difference for the diesel.
