^This appears to be true. Especially with the new gas motor ford is throwing in the 250.
Do you know if your father in law does a lot of idling or short drives? I’ve heard a lot of good things about the new L5P motor

Our ‘13 2500HD 6.0L gas averaged about 7.0 mpg towing a 310GK in the flatland and rolling hills of Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Granted, the truck is at its limits, but that 6.0 is a disaster.
The payload on a diesel 3/4 ton is pretty low, so you might want to think about a 1 ton, since the price difference is small.
We chose the truck we did (F450…not here yet) for:
1) torque and lugging power
2) stability/dual wheels/blowout safety
2) engine brake
3) larger brakes
4) turning radius
Mileage never factored in.

I'm towing a 29RL FW with the Duramax 2500 Chevy truck (four tire). I would not even consider changing the combo. On a good day (flat no A/C) 65-70mph I have gotten upwards 17mpg. Typical when hot is 12

We tow a 2016 GD Solitude 321X with a 2015 GMC 3500 6.6 Duramax, and I drive 70 as much as safely possible. We average 10mpg pulling in the western U.S. Much of our travels are through mountainous areas, and of course mileage drops when pulling a grade, but overall, the average is 10 mpg traveling from Arizona to Montana. Headwinds are more of a problem, and I have seen an average of 7 when going into a strong headwind.
We had gassers before finally getting smart and switching to a diesel, and yes, mileage was horrible, running in the range you mention!

I have the same trailer in the 2020. I’m from Canada so I did some quick calculations. I used to pull it with a 2012 Ford F-250 with the 6.2 gas. I switched to the 2020 f250 6.7 diesel with the 10 speed and man what a difference. I was roughly around what you are getting with your gasser 5-7mpg 30l/100km Canadian hahah. With the diesel I went to easy 20 mpg 12L/100k. The towing experience is night and day between gas and diesel. Worth every penny. Towing that trailer with a diesel you can’t even tell it’s on the back and nothing holds that truck back. Hope that helps.

That’s My Set Up!
I have a 2800BH and have been towing it with my 2008 6.6 Duramax 2500 for four years. At those speeds you can expect a range of 8-12 MPG, depending on road, speed, and weather conditions. My average is 10MPG. In fact, just returned from a trip today. Avg fwy speed was 70, high winds and rain. My average was 10 MPG. I should add that I absolutely love this combo. 6.6 Duramax tows my trailer like it’s not even there!
Also, if you want the ultimate anti-sway set up call a company named Pro Pride (www.ProPrideHitch.com) and get their Hensley hitch. The owners name is Sean, great guy. It’s a little pricey, but it completely eliminates sway. I’ve been running it for four years. Saved my family from a nasty crash back in 2019. Worth every penny!Last edited by HublerFam; 08-10-2022 at 10:05 PM. Reason: Better title

I have a 2022 Chevy 2500 6.6 gas. I’m pulling a 30RBS (7820 empty weight) and get around 9 mpg at 65mph. It’s my daily driver so I didn’t op for the diesel.
Just talked with another fellow at the campground that has a 2021 GMC Duramax. He’s pulling about a 30 foot Forest River bumper pull and says he get around 12-13 at 65. I was kind of surprised because I thought he would get 3 or 4 mpg better than that.2020 Transcend 30RBS
