We do 60-65 most of the time. Slower more often than not.

Rolling across SD and Wyoming I decided to run with traffic at the posted speed limit of 80. It worked for a little while, engine and trans temps started rising so I slowed down to 75. I passed all the 18 wheelers and was passed by all the 4 wheelers.

Prior to retirement, I was a 'hammer down' kind of driver. We had a defined number of days before having to go back to work so I was going no less than 65, if the road conditions allowed - 80mph.... to maximize the amount of time at our destination.
Now that we are retired, 55-65 and if we don't get there today, tomorrow is just fine. Not having to go back to work makes RVing much more relaxing....lol

This has been a wonderfully entertaining and informative thread. 60-65 for me from now on; many thanks to all who have responded. Being 67 and retired, I have been convinced to slow down while towing.

Traveling in California (55 speed limit towing) & Oregon (55-65) quite a bit, I tow at about 62 (I'm about a decade older than that). I go the speed limit if I have to go thru cities. I'll pass up to 70 or so- especially for those getting passed speed up to match my speed.
Now in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Ill kick it to 65-70 when traffic is light. My reaction time & vision is not what it used to be.

We learned to "drive retired" and enjoy not being the ones passing everybody else. It makes for a more relaxing drive. So we tend to follow the flow of the truckers which is 60-65, with 63 feeling like the sweet spot on the interstates. To follow others' comments, I guess we're driving 7 mph above my age, those numbers will align sooner than I'd wish.

I'm in the 63 to 67 MPH category. I've been up to just under 70 out west on those interstates, but I'm not as comfortable there (near 70) as in the mid 60's; I just don't want to be "that guy" screwing up all the traffic.

For me it is the really slow folks on the interstates that mess up traffic (those at or under 10 MPH below the posted speed limit). The speeders can just go on, I ignore them and pray for the safety of others.

And lately it is the truckers barley doing the speed limit or less in the middle of 3 lane interstates that seem to cause traffic situations. Why can't they move over when there isn't any oncoming or exiting traffic?

Now I actually disagree with that. The problem is that there isn't a law or rule about trucks staying in the middle lane. That should be the norm in my opinion. I believe it was TN that we went through some years ago where the trucks had to stay in the middle lane. I thought that was great. It made it easier for them because they didn't have to speed up or slow down for merging traffic, they didn't have to shoot over to the middle lane when some idiot was entering and forgot what it means to merge, and all the other vehicles could easily get by them using either the first or third lanes since they have more agility. Just my $.02...

I tow at the speed limit up to 65 MHP. My truck/trailer combo feels fine going 70+, but I prefer the extra safety margin and improved gas mileage. My self-imposed limit is two MHP over my age, but the two are uncorrelated. I have no issue driving 120+ on a track and in the right vehicle.

On flat highway, the cruise control is set to 62. Seems to be the best balance for performance. Plus, rarely do I need to be concerned with passing anyone. We’re retired- what’s the rush?
