    Turning point swivel box

Looking at a new 5er. The model we are looking at has a "turning point swivel box". Can you use a regular or Andersen hitch on these? To use a regular hitch I assume you would need to lock the swivel box in place? Would I need a different type of hitch to use the swivel box?

Ok...may have answered my question...good old Youtube.

Looks like you use a wedge plate to close up the gap on the hitch to lock it in place there. That way it swivels at box.

Then to swivel at the pin, remove the wedge plate and lock the swivel box down.

You would need a platter syle hitch like the BW to use the turning point system. The the wedge needs to literally wedge into the Y that funnels the pin into the locking mechanism on a standard style hitch. The andersen will not accomodate that and would need the turning point to be locked out.

We use the Reese 16k 5th wheel hitch (see link below). We have had it mounted in our '13 F150 SB SCREW for the past 4 yrs. We also dont use a slider with it either on our 295RL, but never get close to 90 degrees either.

This hitch works great with the LCI/Trailaire Turning Point Pinbox, and the GD OEM supplied wedge fits the Reese hitch plate. If interested, all one would need is a set of bed rails and frame support for the specific vehicle they have that is compatible with that hitch from Reese.

New guy (to 5ers) in the same boat as the OP. Purchased a GD 298BH with Turning Point hitch and have to figure out the truck (2021 Ram 2500 BH without factory pucks) portion. Luckily I have until April. Not looking to save money so much as headaches and damage to truck/coach. Any input is appreciated.

We use the Anderson hitch with our 260RD with the turning point pin box. The turning point is locked. The Anderson is a great hitch for us, since it's light it is easy to get out of the truck when not towing. And I find the Anderson very easy to hitch up. I use a mirror over the hitch to line things up which makes it easy to get it on the first try without the DW having to spot for me.

Thanks for the reply Sailor. Is your Chevy a short box and if so this must be ok with the Turning Point locked out?

I am towing with a Ram 2500 short box. The dealer is pushing a PullRite 16k fixed unit. It seems like it has some nice attributes and I do like the removable rails for getting my bed back when not towing. Decisions decisions.

Yes, we have the shorter bed. While I haven't tried any 90-degree turns, we've had zero issues so far. I did have some slight scrapes on my tonneau cover rails, raising the ball height by an inch took care of that.

You can add the pucks to your Ram and have a clean bed when the hitch is removed. I have a 2500 short bed with Ramboxes. Ram will not factory install the pucks with the Ramboxes, so I ordered the kit and installed it myself. I have a B&W hitch and a Reese Sidewinder pinbox (similar to the Turning Point). I can go past 90 degrees if needed and have a very stable hitch.

Sidewinder and Turning Point should not be used with a slider or gooseneck style connector (where the 5th wheel hitch drops into the ball) - the pin/wedge puts a great deal of stress on the hitch when backing. I went with B&W because it has a very heavy plate.

Thank Jomani. Which B&W unit do you have? How was the puck install? I'm not afraid of the install part if it comes to that and saving a bunch of money. The dealer is quoting 4 hours labor so....
