    To Florida from Pa

Fellow GD owners, how do you travel from the Northeast to Florida? Looking for some other means than I-95. Thanks

We have traveled the east coast a lot over the years and I hate I-95 with a passion! We left Aberdeen, MD, this past Wednesday to empty out our storage unit in Aiken, SC. (Didn't bring the RV this time.) We love the Shenandoah Valley and it's a great time of year to see the colors, so we decided to take the north loop around Baltimore, I-70 to Frederick, MD, US 340 to I-81 and I-77 through Charlotte to I-20 at Columbia. We've done this before and it was very nice. This time there was lots of construction and the traffic was crazy heavy - as bad as I-95 in parts - especially the farther south we got. If it weren't for the fact that we have a prepaid hotel reservation in the same place (Troutville, VA) on the way back, I would consider taking longer and sticking to just US highways (they're more relaxing, anyway - even with all the little towns and stop lights). Once you cross the SC/GA line, the US highways are a great way to get down to the Florida line.

Did I mention it once took us 8-1/2 hours to get back to Aberdeen from Richmond, VA, on I-95? No construction, no accidents... just traffic! Did I mention I hate I-95?

I81, I77, I26, then you will be on I95 for the rest of the run unless you want to drive other roads such as 301 depending on where in Fl you are going. I have heard US301 is a good drive all the way up to I26, I only have traveled it from Zephyrhills to just north of I10 so I don’t know about it from I10 to I26. I95 from the GA line southward is not too bad as it has 3 lanes each way for most of it.

Same thing for us. ^^^^^^^ We've done it for years.

A friend takes I-66 to US17 to I-95 just above Fredericksburg, VA then runs I-95 down to FL.

Or you can come down I-81 to I-40 to I-75 and into FL. But then you have to deal with Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the dreaded Atlanta.

I also think the I77, I26, I95 route is a relatively flat once you get into NC. The hills on I75 are pretty much anything north of Macon GA. I don’t know about I40 nor have I travelled I81 in that section.

I haven’t taken I-81 / I-40 / I-75 route in a while. I know there is a big downgrade nearing Chattanooga but nothing compared to I-81 in PA. Mostly just some hills in N GA.

My adult kids live in Orlando so I make the drive from NC to Orlando at least once a month, 8 out of 10 times with either my MO, or with my Horse trailer with LQ. SO I know I-95 well, and its a mess, and similar to NASCAR in places. Road quality is bad, bridge transitions big, and traffic 99 out of 100 times. It is the most direct route, not always the fastest. I typically leave Raleigh NC about 2am, and am Jacksonville FL about 6.5 hours later. Once I get to The SC/GA line, the road quality does get a little better, and it is at least 3 lanes wide, which is more forgiving on the speed side. I do know there are a lot of other ways, to include going west, and down 77 or 75. They are all longer mileage wise however. There is not what I would call a perfect route. Sorry there is not tons of better news, it’s unfortunate. (My Opinion).

We are in Coatesville, PA, and will soon be traveling to Fort Myers. The 95 route is 17 hours and 5 minutes. The 81, 40, 75 route is 20 hours and 25 minutes. The 95 route takes you through Washington and the 75 route takes you through Atlanta, both cities are prone to long delays. As much as I hate the 95 route, I'll be taking that route. A friend of mine leaves SEPA around 1:30 AM so that he can be through Washington before rush hour. I prefer to leave later in the day so that I can go through Washington after rush hour.

    Safe travels.

What does you trip calculator think about going I81, I77, I26 to I95. The only major city on that route is Charlotte and if you take the loop to the west it is usually pretty easy sailing. There are often slow downs north of Charlotte but usually they are not bad.

It says 18 hours and 52 minutes. It may be better leaving from your area. Where are you going in FL (which coast?)
