Well, as a follow-up, I have a company coming to do a full inspection and rebuild. I am concerned about the wiring as the breakaway switch is completely melted.

Thanks for the follow-up. I, for one, would be very interested in hearing what the final results are, so please don't hesitate to post back the end results.

I would inspect the spindle to make sure it was not overheated (looking for the discoloration). Inspect the wiring at the junction box and the portions coming out of the trailer to the axles. That's what I would do since everything will have to be taken off anyway.

AND, if alloy wheels, check for warping.
I second the upgrade to Disc Brakes.

By the time you add up the cost for all the parts, new drums, brake shoes, springs, bearings and races, and magnets, you'll be well on your way to the cost of Disc Brakes. Look at this as an opportunity to upgrade !!!!!!!!!

    Everything is toast.
When I was involved in sprint car racing, sometimes the fastest way around the track involved heavy use of the brakes. We could see the cherry red discs from the pits. It was the cost of being fast that night. All new is the answer.

Excellent time for a disc brake upgrade. I have them, and will never own another trailer without them

Got them fixed yesterday. Unfortunately I could not afford a disc brake upgrade. Ended up replacing everything from the spindles out. Rims and tires looked okay.
