NOPE! Not impressed. NOT AT ALL.

No mention of statistical process control and/or how they are testing for defects to reduce errors in manufacturing.

PDIs alone are nothing but after the fact inspections. They find only the most obvious failures. These kind of inspections actually increase the costs of manufacturing.

A true quality control program uses statistical process control, reduces costs in the long term by finding better ways to assemble and reduce defects. It does so by tracking faults identified by PDIs, from customer and dealer warranty claims and long term maintenance and repair cycles, and tries to figure out where in the process the faults occurred. To the best of my knowledge, NO RV manufacturer even makes the attempt. ISO 9000 standards? Ha Ha. Make me laugh.

Outside major military contractors, most marine, auto and aircraft industries do it well. The IT industry does it pretty well in hardware manufacturing, less so in developing software, unless its for the military.

RV guys have never heard of W.E. Deming, Total Quality Management (TQM), statistical process control or the Deming Institute. And they have no idea how Toyota and Honda took over the auto industry over the last 40 years.

We had a 2005 21' Jayco fifth wheel that was very good. We didn't stay with them because their floor plans and interior styling did not appeal to us.

They were a privately owned company then were they not? When did Thor buy them?

Yeah, Deming tried to tell the U.S. auto makers his theory that quality will drive the marketplace. The automakers laughed at him so he went to Japan.

    Exactly.
Say what you do, then do what you say.
If you don't say much, you don't have to do much.

(BTW I still have my TQM binder from many moons ago.)

I spent 35 years in systems design, procurement and budgeting in the Departments of Defense and Commerce. Companies that really did statistical process control / quality management delivered value products more consistently and had better follow-up support and maintenance programs. They were especially preferred when we had to deal with complex integrated hardware and software systems from different vendors. An excellent systems integrator is hard to find.

The Japanese listened to W.E.D. only because they were destitute. Their nation and factories were destroyed. Even their phone system didn't work. The Japanese can thank the US military for directing them to use Deming to help them rebuild. Deming had reformed the 1940 US census, went on to help the military reduce defects in WW2 and was brought to Japan in the late 1940s by MacArthur.

Meanwhile the US auto industry, which was booming and trying to keep up with demand, worried little about quality, and instead focused on output and style. Sound familiar to our favorite recreational product industry?
