shopping for used reflection & appropriate truck
hello!
I am brand new to the community and looking to purchase a used reflection. the seller is selling both the reflection and the truck and before thinking about buying them I want to make sure that the truck is a good fit for the trailer (abides by the 80/20% rule I keep hearing about...)
I have the VIN for both models, if that would be helpful for someone to tell me if I'm making a good decision.. or at least give input lol
The trailer VIN is 573FR3525H3312555
The truck is 3C6UR5JL8KG606942 (2019 dodge ram 2500 big horn)

I have no idea what model Reflection you are talking about, maybe someone else will, but for the RAM truck with that vin, the max payload when it left the factory is 2,156 lbs, and max towing is 17,2870 lbs. I am surprised at the low payload for a Big Horn with a long box (8' bed), even with the diesel. I would check the actual sticker on the truck to verify the numbers, although the RAM site is usually accurate, that low of payload doesn't make sense on the lowest trim truck.

I would say the trailer is OK, but you should probably use a 1 ton truck. Based on what I could find the advertised pin weight is around 2100lbs unloaded, it will only get heavier loaded and add about 200lbs for hitch and people/stuff in the truck and you will be well over the capacities of a 3/4 ton truck.

Looks like a pretty nice floor plan (https://www.rvguide.com/specs/grand-...on/327rst.html), if you're not that experienced with RVs, it might make sense to hire a professional inspector before you buy it. Could end up saving you a lot of money down the road.

You'll be over the trucks CCC by a large margin and probably the RAWR as well. Probably looking at 2800-3000 lbs for loaded pin weight.
That puts you in 1 ton truck territory. I'm sure the seller will say it tows fine and it probably did or maybe it was a struggle at times.
I'm not a big fan of the rear coil springs in the Ram 2500. BTDT with a 2018 and a smaller 28' 9200 lb 5er. The 2018 didn't feel as solid as the 2012 leaf sprung 2500 I had prior.
Moot point since the trucks undersized for the 5er but ask the seller if he got the Y78 recall done. It's for the high pressure full pump. Ram is swapping it out for a more reliable one. If it fails it can cause $10,000 worth of damage to the motor. Warranty should transfer over? But IMO I'd pass on the truck and make an offer on the 5er if you think it's something you want. If this is your first foray into RV's I would suggest you find an RV inspector and have it thoroughly checked out.Last edited by goducks14; 02-05-2023 at 10:31 AM.

Mostly my opinion, but forego the 80/20 "rule". If you went by that, you'd have to have a truck with a payload of over 3,500 lbs., and you'd only be able to load the trailer with about 800 lbs. of stuff. IOW pitch the 80/20 out the window.

Definitely over on the pin weight. Simple solution would be to ask the seller for CAT receipts - ask for three weights, truck alone, truck only with 5th wheel attached, and weight of the full package. You will find that you are already over on pin weight with an empty trailer.
I wouldn’t be concerned with the 80/20 rule. That came about before the big three agreed to standardized towing capacity testing (SAE J2807). Now they all have to prove that the truck is capable by subjecting to rigorous testing including a crazy hill climb. Prior to that, they could simply apply a number that fit their marketing strategy. As far as gross vehicle weight limitations, that is more about meeting a specific weight class - 250/2500 series have all kept the GVW at 10,000. I think Chevy was the first to push past the 10,000 mark.
