    Pay load help

Looking at Solitude 280rk. It weighs 12334 with a payload 2666 so 15000 GVW. I've been told to figure 25% for actual pin weight which makes this 3750Lbs. Is that correct? I have a f350 srw with max payload of 3600 - guess this 5th is way too much for my truck

Whats a good way to estimate? GD says the dry pin weigh is around 2k. I thought another 1k with me wife dog hitch miscellaneous- not 2500k.

It's a lariet long bed 4.3 gears - no sunroof. Thanks for your thoughts. Adding 2700 lbs to the dry pin weight using the 25% of GVW just seems like a lot.

I will second NB Canada's observation. I realize they are all different but we have a Solitude 380FL. Our pin weight at 17,100 total loaded weight (18,000 GVWR) was 3,420 lbs or right at 20%. Unloaded (factory), the pin weight was 21.7%. Our pin weight % after loading went down because most of the storage space in the 380FL is behind the RV axles. You can manage that to some extent.

From the GD website, the unloaded pin weight of the 280rk is 2,044 for an unloaded weight of 12,334. That's only an unloaded pin weight ration of 16.6%. From the floor plan, if looks like most of the storage is in front of the axles. If you can put your heavy stuff closest to the axles, or even inside in the back of the RV when traveling, that would help with the pin weight while hooked up - the only time it matters.

If you can load the RV to stay close to the 20% number, 20% of 15,000 would be 3,000 lbs. Depending upon your cargo - people, pets, hitch, tools, extra fuel, you might still be pretty close, but OK. I don't have any experience other than with our 380FL and there are others on this forum with vastly more knowledge, but you should be able to pull that 5er with a SRW 1 ton truck.

If you have a long bed, you don't need a slider hitch and could go with one of the lightweight options like the Anderson or Reese. That will help a lot.

Tom thank you for your input. It really scares me to be that close to the max.

We usually travel light but that's been short 4 or 5 day trips in the past. We plan on doing much longer trips. Unfortunately I am worrier and would hate driving that close to the max.

Didn't think about that. I've seen them at dealers and shows. I looked at the welds and asked myself if they'd work. Of course many people use the Anderson and I'd be open to it.

I’ve been towing a Reflection 337RLS for 6 years with several F-350s SRWs with payloads ranging between 3400-3550 lbs. My Reflection 337RLS has. 13,995 lb max weight and a measured pin weight of 2800-2950 depending on how it was loaded.

We’ve been using a 37# Andersen Ultimate Aluminum 5th wheel hitch to save weight. Add 2 people (400lbs) tonneau cover plus 50#s of dogs, and other stuff and we were right at max payload. It towed fine but stopping was a concern. I had disc brakes installed on the RV and it made a huge difference.

I recently upgraded to a new F450 so payload is no longer an issue. I haven’t towed with it yet because I’m putting some miles on it first. Today I finished installing a tonneau cover,, a bedrug bedliner and the Andersen hitch so it’s ready to tow.
