The Land Rover that I looked up online showed a towing capacity of up to 8201 lbs.....roughly 350 lbs more than the GVWR of his trailer. It's not something that I would consider to be inadequate. But as we all know, payload capacity comes into play and the amount of tongue weight that the trailer has, along with any and all other weight on/in the vehicle.

I'm talking about a metal l-shaped chunk of metal that goes into the hitch receiver and has a ball on it to have the trailer connect. Not much of a "manual" to consult. And, whether or not I signed away my first born upon purchase doesn't lessen the amount of anger I can feel. Just wondering if there was something "normal" about this situation that I didn't understand.

Part of the purchase process was to THOROUGHLY research with Land Rover and with the Dealership to understand if and how this combination would work. So, I did my homework to ensure -- beyond any doubt -- that the configuration of vehicle and trailer would work. Since then, I have -- really -- weighed everything that gets added to the trailer. And I've had the trailer independent weighed to confirm my own weight calculations. Everything checks out. Except for the critical piece sticking out my hitch receiver with a ball on it. The thing I call a "hitch" because the a-frame tongue connects to it and there is nothing else.
So, I know I'm okay with the physics and the safety.
After being so careful -- I'm just shocked to find that a piece I took for granted -- was waaaaay wrong for this setup.

That hitch is definitely undersized for your trailer. What did you get for a replacement?

Yes definitely undersized. It looks like the sway control was just staked under the ball. Really bad.

That hitch in no way shape or form should have been put into service for that trailer. Even with the load leveling in the vehicle, a weight distributing hitch with sway control would be a good choice.
If nothing else file a complaint with the BB, they will usually look into complaints and might be able to get you a refund on what you paid for the hitch and it’s installation.
As for how angry…you should be very angry, that hitch put you, your family and everyone else on the road around you in danger of death or serious injury, we all should be angry about that.Last edited by DougW9876; 02-17-2023 at 06:33 PM.

You should not just look at published towing capacity as a limiting factor. There are many other weights that must be considered such as tongue weight, payload, rear axle limitation, hitch rating, etc.
According to the owners manual a 2018 Discovery has a limit of tongue weight not to exceed 7% of trailer gross weight. A 2600rb which has a gross weight of 7850#s then the allowable max tongue weight should only be 540#s. Even an empty 2600RB exceeds that significantly. A loaded for travel 2600RB would likely come close to 1,000#s.
You are also correct that the owners manual states that a weight distributing hitch should not be used as it will damage the vehicle. That’s something I’ve never heard before. Most other hitches have ratings with and without a W/D hitch. The manual also warns not to exceed vehicle gross weight, max rear axle weight, max trailer weight or max tongue weight. Exceeding any of these can potentially cause injury or death according to the owners manual.
The hitch receiver on your Discovery should have a factory label stating weight limitations.
I’m in the camp that too much trailer for that vehicle.Last edited by Jerryr; 02-17-2023 at 07:08 PM.

That was super dangerous towing like that! But if you can't run a WDH setup with your tow rig, you should really really consider a tow vehicle that can take one.
