Campground for a night or two near Painted Hills/John Day Fossils Bed, Oregon

    Hello,

we're planning a quick trip to central Oregon in mid May (roughly between 8th and 12th). Was wondering if anyone has found good campsites that can accomodate a 28" trailer around Painted Hills and John Day Fossils Bed near Mitchell, OR. We'll be spending a few days near Bend (where' we've been often) right before that, but with two little kids, a daytrip from Bend would stretch kid's and parent's patience too much.... we're looking for a place closer that we could stay for one, maybe two nights. No electricity or water needed. Will be travelling witha 28" TT, and another car and tent. Most "primitive"campgrounds" (e.g. Ochoco Divide Campground) don't seem to be open until mid of May or Memorial day.

    Thanks
    Matt

You might find this site helpful:

A sister app I use to plan trips is RV Life Trip Wizard. It's a paid subscription, but has all of the campground information above plus mapping and routing tools (you enter the parameters for your RV/rig) and much more. You can also record your reservation information and link over to the details on each campground from the map.

We had a nice time at Ochoco Divide campground, though there are many other forest service sites nearby.

The priest hole. It is one of my favorites. No problem getting down there in a 32 foot travel trailer. There is a little campground but past that, if the river is low, is a gravel bank we camp on. You can also camp in the field.
