Brake problems , Ram truck
Hi, new to the forum and just purchased 315RLTS. Having huge challenges with brakes. I have RAM 2500 that towed a 27 foot Jayco eagle with no issues. I can’t seem to dial in these brakes. Have truck trailer set to big electric and have moved the gain all over. The issue is when slowing getting off the freeway felt like there was almost no trailer brakes and then suddenly at about 10-15mph they just jolted me and locked up. This is the constant pattern in two short journeys with the rig, very little sense of braking and then suddenly jolt when going slow. Tried the 20 mph and engage only the trailer brakes and it feels like nothing at 20 mph and then sudden locked the brakes at 10-5 mph. Help greatly appreciated.

Is this a new trailer, or a new-to-you trailer? Are all the tires locking up?

First thing I would do is verify voltage coming out of the 7 pin from the truck and check all connections to ensure they are tight.
Then with the truck and trailer connected electronically check the voltages at each wheel.
Look for any obvious breaks or shorts along the way.
Check the magnet at each wheel to ensure it’s engaging
Last but not least, pull the wheels to ensure your grease seal is not blown. I think this is unlikely because they do grab just intermittently.
I think you are chasing electrical gremlins.

What year is the RAM? There was a bad run of integrated controllers that had to be replaced with a revised part number. There was also in a subsequent year or two a required software update. The RAM uses a pulse width modulated signal so it's not easy to diagnose for the average DIYer. Have you visited your dealer and asked them to check it's performance? I realize you indicated you towed a prior trailer fine, but coincidences happen and process of elimination always good practice. One thing I would spend the time doing is making sure to clean the contacts on the truck side connector and also the trailer side connector and make sure everything is making good contact and adjust accordingly. Wouldn't be the first gremlin caused by a bad tow vehicle to camper connection, nor discovery of a bad umbilical because the transporter stretched it...

Thanks for insights. The truck is 2019 and the trailer is 2023. These are great first steps (actually a few second and third that are probably outside my skills set!). It seems electrical in its behavior was just wondering if there are “normal” break-in dynamics that I should be aware of. Thanks for the help!

I would begin looking at the truck's brake controller. As has been suggested get your controller checked out by the dealer (be sure to get the best tech that knows these controllers.). Verif you have the latest software update.
I would also go through all the settings for the brake controller in great detail with the owners manual in hand.
Check for things like:
Electric Over Hydraulic brake setting.
Any type of activation delay programmed into the controller.
Verify every setting possible.David and Peggy

Being it's a new trailer, have you burnished the brakes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9HDloz9fq8&t=2s
This applies to electric brakes - not sure what you have...Chad

If it's a new trailer, I'd take it to the dealer for a warranty check.
I went through this with my 2022 trailer- the RV dealer tried to blame my truck for no brakes. I had a buddy hook up his Ram to my my trailer and the same symptoms appeared. It was the trailer and not the truck.Dave & Carol
