    Looking to Alaska in 2024

Part of the reason we bought the truck and trailer we did was to go to Alaska next year. We winter at The Ranch, the Escapee co-op near Carlsbad. The general idea is to start at The Ranch, head to Quartzsite for a bit, then start working our way north. At this point most of the details are unknown. What words of wisdom do you have for us?

Never been, but have read other threads about it. Bring an extra spare tire for the trailer, maybe the truck too. Spare set of springs and shackles couldn't hurt either.

Definite on the spares! Extra full fuel cans for the truck too!

I have read a lot of testimonials by those who done the trip from CONUS to Alaska..... those were fairly interesting reads on what issues they ran into. We decided that we will fly or take the rail there and back instead.

    ^^This.

We had 3 extra spares for our trailer (had the tires on our rig replaced just before traveling). We didn't need them, but we gave one to someone else in our group that needed one.

Big help - Milepost book for Alaska. Shows all routes/exits/services.

I've traveled most of the country, and several other countries, and I'll have to admit driving to Alaska has never made the top ten.

Right before covid, we planned to fly there and rent an rv...but the restrictions cancelled those plans. Not sure when we will consider it again.

We'd like to do it one day but after talking to someone who did it a few years back, they suggested that we not consider taking our own rig but to rent one since the roads are in such bad shape. They even broke an axle coming back and were lucky enough to be close to a small service repair station that could help.

If we choose to make the trip, we will seriously consider their advice.

We broke a spring hanger on our Alaska/Yukon trip. We were close to Whitehorse and able to get it fixed and back on the road within 2 hours.

The roads can be rough, but certainly not the axle-killer that we heard about before our trip. The big thing to remember is - take your time. We were in a caravan of 22 rigs and only one of them had an axle issue. Mostly due to having the wrong size axles on their rig for it's size, overloaded at rear of rig, and the way the driver drove (too fast).

We did take it upon ourselves to include extra spare tires and an extra spring in our "just in case" supplies.
