thanks. we are very experienced hunters. we went with archery about 30 years ago for the better odds of getting drawn. got into muzzle loaders recently for the same reason. we (wife and brother and myself) have spent a lot on taxidermy bills. our best one was DW's archery 6x7 bull elk. 55 " main beams and 42.5" inside spread. that was in 2006. i have the same unit with a rifle and will be looking for his offspring. DW"s bull set a very high bar.

LOL some years ago when cameras were legal, we carpeted the unit with them. had over 20,000 bulls on film. only one was in the same class. i just hope to get something respectable.

    julie's 6x7 bull
    Nice!

Me, personally, I hunt for food. If I draw a bull or E/S tag and I have one in my sights, then sure. Otherwise it's cow elk for me, to me, the meat is more tender... Usually.

Is that the real reason you had to get a dually, to be able to haul her catches. LOL

the best tasting one i ever tagged was my first one. a 5x5 sattelite bull. after that, i kept getting my second choice cow tags. i was batting .500 with them and decided to quit putting in for them and focus only on large bulls. my success rate went way down, but i have become a much better hunter since being selective ..i let a LOT walk away. the surest way to never tag a big one is to take the first one that you see.
a few years after julie took that big one, which did not taste good at all. (probably as he was the herd bull, and she shot him as he was mounting one of his cows..) i had been watching a 7x7 grow all year. i had blind setup where he was hanging out. determined to get a shot, i spent almost all day there every day. just taking a lunch break when julie relieved me.one day during lunch, julie called me. she said my 7 point was in view, and she wanted me to get the shot, as i was the one had been working so hard for it. i told her if she had a shot, to take it. she protested, saying she already had a big one. i told that the big ones do not make many mistakes, and if he made one on her watch, that she needed to take him as it might be the only mistake he made. as it turned out, she said he never came into range. and we went home empty. it was a great hunt.

@huntindog - congratulations on the tag and have a great hunt.

Buddies and I did a CO bull elk hunt several years ago in the Durango area. Bad weather and full moon resulted in very few elk taken by any hunting parties. We didn't even get a shot.

The experience was wonderful though being on awesome country for a week. Riding horses up to camp and back a day each way was a little scary at times and wet when the one horse with an attitude threw me off in a raging creek ! Yea, I got back on him the next morning after a conversation he and I had and all good after that.

Look forward to seeing your pictures and hearing stories !
