It could be just the way the transmission shifts. I think my new 10 speed Ford tranny shifts a bit more harshly in the first 3 or 4 gears than my older 6 speed ever did. the DW even commented on it on this trip. I've tried Tow Haul mode and other modes, none seem any better than another.

A hitch or hitch set up should not cause chucking. However with a MorRyde pin box there can be some as the hitch "slides" back and forth starting and stoping. I experienced some of that on mine when I used that pin box.

It would be helpful to know your rig type, truck, hitch set up.

I think you're right, it is the transmission. I have a 2020 Ford F250 diesel w/ 40,000 miles. It does have 10 speed transmission. I'm thinking of taking it to the dealer to see if the transmission programming needs to be adjusted. Thanks

I'm not sure if that's it unless there is a problem with your transmission. I have the same hitch, my truck isn't a Ford, but it has a 10 speed transmission. I don't get any chucking going or stopping.

The transmission programming in the Ford's (as well as others I assume) learns as you drive it. If the 40k miles were put on by you, this may not be an answer, but, if someone else put those miles on, it may be used to a different driving style and/or not towing.

I believe you can disconnect the battery and "reset" the learning portion of the transmission. Double check this info however, I'm not familiar with the 10 speeds as much as the 6 speeds.

I doubt relearning is going to fix anything. Mine did it from day one and still does - maybe it is a slow learner. I think it is just the way Ford has programmed the shifting. It is different than the 6 speed. i don't think it is an issue. It is what it is. Ford de-tunes the engine in the low gears (probably to limit all that torque when shifting) and the low gears pretty much snap into the next gear up until 4th, then things smooth out - nicely.

Without a trailer you can feel a difference in normal and tow/haul too. And it is especially noticeable (you can feel each lower gear shift) when you select the 'exhaust brake' too - with the EB engaged ALL the low gears are used; with it off it skips 2nd gear.

A slower take off from a dead stop is less noticeable than just jamming the throttle down when towing. If you hammer the throttle when towing you can even feel a bit of shutter in the drive train. Just take it easy on take offs.

When I am towing in slow stop and go traffic (where the truck barley gets in to 3rd gear before having to let up on the throttle and stop again) I take it out of tow/haul for a more pleasant shifting experience.

This is for Fords. I can't say how other transmissions operate or work, but since the OP has a Ford I am providing my Ford experience.

Good idea. But does axel wrap actually occur at low speed / slow starts?

Well, maybe? The more torque applied, the more it's a possibility. Easing into a start should reduce it. It's just something to consider.

Has OP tried starting in second gear?

Is you companion puck mounted or rail mounted? If puck mounted check all pucks for tightness. If necessary re-tighten the castle nut when locked in place. If rail mounted double check the rail installation and are you using the proper size pins. Any slop will give you the chugging - but I have not heard that term used. I know bucking (for-aft rocking - push pull) and chucking (clank / slop up and down in hitch pin connection). The B&W hitch head should be totally silent, otherwise give B&W a call. BTW did you did the install or some Kid at the shop. If it was a kid check the arm bolts and re torque everything. Are you using a lube plate? That will help tighten up the hitch connection too, but B&W requires a special one.
