    The scourge of idling

As I sit here listening to yet another person idling their diesel truck for 45 mins while they load up to leave, I thought I would do a post about what modestly bad manners this is. I asked my diesel mechanic if this practice was needed for any reason prior to leaving in the morning. He assured me it was not. Quiet is better.

Another of the many reasons I don't use campgrounds.

It is actually bad for modern diesels to idle. Causes problems with emissions systems.

I do idle for a few minutes while unhooking to let the engine/turbo cool down. I've heard that shutting down right away after working the engine is bad practice.

I often idle when unhitching and doing initial setup, or when doing final teardown and safety checks before departing. Mama and puppy need a cool place to hang out while I do the work. Comes with the territory when camping where it's sunny and warm. I prefer they stay in the truck instead of get in my way.

I'll idle when I hitch, pull up landing/stabilizing gear & do walk around checking lights, bumping tires & check campsite. Truck will warm sufficiently on the way out of the campground.
When arriving at the camp site, I'll shut the truck down after unhitching, the turbo will cool efficiently while pulling thru the campground & backing in.
I have a gauge package to check turbo temps, no need to load up the DPF unnecessarily.
Diesels don't warm much when idling, they need to be under load.

I hated camping during the early diesel pickup days when the folks would idle their diesels from when the fired them up at 5 am till they left at 8.

My Dad had on old Dodge that was straight piped. I could hear him long before he got to the campground. Finally told him to get a muffler or camp with my sister's family.

Another reason why I'm passing on upgrading to a diesel and will stick with a larger gasser.

That's no reason not to change to a diesel. It's a reason to remind diesel owners' they don't need to do it.

Gas / diesel.... doesn't matter. Idling for prolonged periods is annoying at campgrounds.

It's been my experience that the big class A diesel pushers are the most offensive. I get that they need to idle to get air pressure up, but that's a 5 minute thing at best.

Todays diesels are way quieter than the older ones. The sound difference from our old loud 2003 Ford to the new quiet GMC is amazing.
