Hwy 2 in Nebraska
Planning a trip from Northern Calif. to Springfield, Ill. Taking I80 to Omaha then I29 south. I see a shortcut on Hwy 2 to avoid Omaha. Anyone know this Hwy.?

It works, but Hiway 2 tends to be in poor shape. It's not in disrepair, per se, but it done so poorly it jounces things around badly. But despite that, it's better than all the way to Omaha, and back.

Four lane all the way I believe. If you take 77 south just west of Lincoln, it will connect with 2, but I don't know if 2 is done all the way. The safest way would be to take 2 all the way through Lincoln, it would be slower than if the south 2 is done, but faster if it's still unfinished.
It would be nice if someone would chime in who has been on it recently.Howard and Peggy

We always take Nebraska 2 between Lincoln and I29 when heading south or coming from the south. It is four lane divided all the way from Lincoln to I29. You will actually be in three different States doing this route (Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri). FWIW fuel is somewhat cheaper in Iowa than in Nebraska.
Yes, we've been on the highway recently, Monday, in fact. There is a stretch near Nebraska City westbound that bounces things around some, Haven't been eastbound since last Fall.
Fun fact: Nebraska City is the home of Arbor Day, started by J. Sterling Morton (Morton salt) and his mansion is open for tours. We've not stayed there, but we have been driving past the Victorian Acres RV Park since it was being built. The trees are finally big enough to provide some shade.David Lininger, kb0zke
