I set the centre drill bit so that it extended just a bit beyond the leading edge of the bi-metal hole saw.. I swallowed hard and started drilling ..

As soon as the centre drill bit exposed the sheet metal below the aluminum trim I stopped drilling, I removed the centre drill bit, and the continued drilling … until the hole was completely drilled.

I then removed the cutout aluminum piece … and removed the protective sheet metal piece , exposing the rubber seal below…

Using a small utility knife I cut an X cut in the exposed rubber D seal, folded and taped the cut rubber back so I could expose the second rubber piece below.. I cut a small flap in this piece and folded and taped it back as well finally exposing the defective motor retaining screw … which I removed…

I was then able to remove the defective motor which I found was badly corroded … so water has been seeping past the slide seals and getting to the motor …

    Thanks nprario …

I’ll need to determine the path water was taking to get into the motor … there is rust around two of the slots including the slot that the retaining screw goes into. During winter storage I did not find any evidence of water on top of the slide or on the floor

I’ll look through this section of the forum to see what sources for replacement motors members recommend.

I used this one on my last trailer with great success. Much cheaper than the lippert component.

Thanks nprario! I just ordered two of those same units you mentioned as I suspect the other side may also have issues. I like that there is water protective heat-shrink covering the upper 2/3 of the unit.

If you are talking about the motor suggested above by @nprario, I ordered one as a spare, and thankfully I've not had to use it. Please let us know after you install it if it works OK. I also ordered one of the short 5' control cables to use as a test cable if I have issues on the road.

I think I'm going to go ahead and drill holes just as you did in case I have an issue with the slide closed.

I did have a cable go bad and it took 3 guys to push the slide in after disconnecting the control cables. Of course mine was not corroded like yours.

@Greg_C great job and write-up, and thanks for taking the time to take pictures. This will surely come in handy to other members stuck in the same situation. I just might go ahead and either drill that hole or at least mark it. Now that you got it removed, would you have done it any differently? Like a bigger hole or placement?

Thanks @Ynot4me2 … after exhausting all of the suggestions and options, and after a silent venting and cursing session, I had no other choice but to figure out how to get to the motor retaining screw. As I could see the failed motor relative to the top of the slide out I was going to estimate the motor slot location, until I realized I could get a visual and much more accurate screw location from the operating motor side. I did take a leap of faith that the motor placement and retaining screw locations would be more or less identical on both side… and the retaining screw ended up being just slightly off centre of the 1-1/8” hole I cut … which gave me a bit of room to cut and peel back the exposed rubber seals … I think a 1” hole would be ok as well.

I was happy that the screw measurements meant I only had to cut into one of the Aluminum slide pieces, and that afterwards the hole would be covered/hidden by the molded plastic corner piece. I was very fortunate that it was the rear motor that failed as I could access it and do troubleshooting while slide closed… the front motor is not accessible with the slide closed as I can’t get into the front bedroom… I was also going to mark or cut a similar hole in the other side however with no access to bedroom I won’t be able to get to it to remove it … I am going to replace both motors for piece of mind , and then spend some time closely inspecting and repairing the rubber seals along the top of the slide and in particular above and around the motors and mechanicals …

BTW I did disassemble the failed motor as I was curious what I would find…
The actual motor was fine, however water got to the multi-level gearing section and it was a mess… I took some pictures… which I will post under a new thread … I cleaned up the gearing section, repacked with grease, reassembled, tested and “it’s alive” and working …

I’ll send pics of the new motors arriving June 1 and provide update on installation.

Thanks again for all assistance and encouragement… much appreciated
