We plan to be in Florida for December and January - but, location is up in the air - we fly be the seat of our pants - reservations are too much like being tied to that work clock - the only current reservation is in Key West 2nd week of December.

In the area we travelled from Ft Myers to the panhandle, we paid between $22 and $42 per night at state parks. Coming from Canada, we don't qualify for the various state/retired/military/other discounts that can reduce this substantially . . . but, state parks are still one of the best deals if you like to move about. Two weeks is the maximum stay allowed at any park.

We used to travel like that too. Until last year, we arrived at a state park in VA to find they reserve 100% of their sites. No transient sites are held back in VA.
Had to drive another couple hours (after reserving the last available) to another park. Every park in the area we had planned on stopping was full. State/federal or private. We spent that next morning reserving the rest of our 6 week trip. Some were almost all booked.

We don't really like being tied to reservations. But find if its a popular destination it makes life easier knowing we have a spot we fit in to sleep for a few nights

Agreed that making reservations (up to 11 months in advance for Florida State parks !) takes away from the "nomad wanderings" that are a great part of the RV life . . . but, if you want to wander into "Snowbird Country" between December and March . . . you better have reservations .

1 more year to work..... But planning this for Jan. 2017. Thanks for all the info. I hope we can stay in the Naples area. Want to stay one month at Boyd's $$$$. But can't wait to try it. Hope the wife doesn't kill me - tight quarters.

We're set up at Orange City Rv Resort for January. No other GD trailers here, which means we have the nicest camper in the park. It's not as nice as Seasons in the Sun in Mims we stayed at last year, but we couldn't get in there. This'll do for Jan, Feb. Then after a quick trip home we move west to AZ and TX for March & April. Anybody recommend Sun Resort Casa Verde outside Phoenix? Or another resort?

I have wintered in Florida for the past 45 years, here all of the other seasons too. We were heading north last week when it seemed every other RV on the road was heading south! We are a long way from retirement, so we are short trippers.
    Take care,
