Wheel bearing temps?
How many of you check the temps of the hubs at each stop? When we stop I check the temperature of the wheel between the lug bolts with a infrared gun. With the outside air temp in the 40's I getting 60 to 70 degrees on the shady side and 70 to 80 on the sunny side. I might be anal, but I just have to do it. LOL. Am I alone in this ritual?

I check at each stop as well. I don't remember what the temps were but I just look to see if one is a lot higher than any of the others. So far I have not seen much difference.

Call me anal too. I check tires, bearings/brakes with IR gun at each stop. Just make sure everything is even.

You guys are ahead of your time. That's a smart thing to do. Another smart thing is to go ahead and hand pack the bearings with thick axle grease and do away with Lippert's "motor oil" they call axle grease. And put in a $4 axle seal instead of the cheap $2 Chinese axle seal that Lippert uses.

I have a gun as well, but usually just feel with the back of my hand. If I were to feel any heat radiating as I get close to the hub I would go get the gun, never had to worry about it.

Hi Bamaman,
After I attended the Grand Design Rally in August, I did a tour of the Lippert factory. It is a family run business that does it's best to use USA products. I asked Emily about the seals and her response was that produce so many axles that they need to source seals from 3 different companies as no US company can produce the volume of seals that they require. I also believe that they use quality grease. From my understanding if the bearing grease overheats it liquifies. I can attest to this as I made a rookie mistake and dragged my trailer brakes for 3 miles ( opps ).
I did not attempt to write this to be a cheerleader for Lippert but I witnessed that their call centre was locally staffed, they also had working mock-ups of all their components to assist problem solving in the call centre. As a Canadian I was quite impressed with Lippert and their efforts to use made in USA whenever possible!
I must admit that I am new to this scene so please feel free to correct me if you feel that I am off base.
Thanks

Appreciate your comments, Denis. Refreshing to know that our USA companies are using USA products and they seem very intent on providing a great service to all of us.

While checking mine with the gun I'm looking for a bearing reading much higher than the others to make sure I don't have a bearing going out
