Quick Battery State of Charge Question

So I have my 2 - 6 volt Trojan batteries out of the trailer while I do some work. They've been disconnected from the converter for a couple hours. I decided I wanted to test them with my volt meter they read 13.13. Is that possible? I thought a 100% charge was about 12.6 or so.

These are about 1 1/2 YO and the trailer is primarily hooked up to shore power whether camping or at home so pretty much under constant charge through the converter.

    TIA

    Hi Paul,

I would say absolutely possible with zero loads and only a couple of hours after taking them off the charger. The best way to test batteries is to see how they respond under load and the voltage they return to after that load is removed. An inexpensive way to do this is with a load tester such as the one in the attached picture. This device applies a reasonably heavy load through a resistive element and displays voltage during and after test. There are more expensive electronic versions . . . but, this one works too.

Thanks Rob. I was hoping you would see this post. I already have the batteries back in and connected. I have the shore power disconnected so I will test them again before I button her up. Will that work?

Run a few light loads for a hour or so and those big deep cycle batteries should stabilize at 12.6 to 12.7 which is 90% to 100% state of charge.
