Water Filter or No water Filter

    Hello all,
We are newbies to RVing, we have 1 season under our belts and we know that we made the right choice unit & manufacturer!! Since we live near the Flint, MI area the recent chain of events has got me thinking about water quality everywhere we might travel. So, my question is...do you use a filter system? If so, what type?

Even if we only drink bottled water, should I install a system for the good of the trailer?

The thoughts of more experienced RVers will be most welcome!!!

    Thank You!
    Jim

Hi Jim, I use a Hydro Life water filter (Model HL-200) that I bought at CW. I haven't found a good space inside the trailer to mount it so I run it "in-line". I have a large bucket and put a hole in the lid that allows the filter to drop in. I NEVER hook up without it, even if I'm filling my tank at home I use it.

    Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply! I have noticed the bucket in some of your pictures and was wondering what you used it for, now I know . We really enjoyed following along on your cross country journey through all of your wonderful pictures! We hope to do that kind of trip in a couple of years. How far in advance did you start planning? Did you have reservations everywhere?

Say hi to Deb for us as well!

I always use an inline filter because you never know what you are hooking up to.

I can't wait for you to travel. We would be up to meet you along the way!!

I started planning years ago but nothing formal. I just roughed out in my mind where I wanted to visit and the route I wanted to take (i.e. northern route for eastbound and southern route for westbound). I would read of places people visit on line, find those places on the internet and then flag them for future reference. Things didn't get specific until a month or 2 before we left. The only advanced reservations I made where for the rally in Indiana and a family reunion in Springfield, IL. The more specific stops and times you make, the less freedom you have and it can be really difficult.

Other than those stops, we had our rough route, which changed often throughout the trip, and we would look ahead maybe 1 or 2 stops. Sometimes we would find a place we absolutely didn't want to miss and we would call for availability and maybe make a reservation. Holiday weekends required extra attention but we never had to drive aimlessly to find a spot to overnight and we never had to overnight at Wally World, although we would have if we needed to.

Just as a side note; if we had had too many reservations we would have been all screwed up by our almost week unscheduled stay in Flint!

This was very uncomfortable for me at first. All those years and years of limited vacation time where we planned in such detail and lined up reservations always! It was scary but became very liberating. Now I encourage everyone to loosen up and try to be a nomad, it's fun.

I'm like Poppy I always use a filter, I flush the hydrant for a minute or so before I hook up my Y connection, filter and potable water hose. I use the other side of the Y for my black tank flush hose. Never use your potable hose to flush the black tank.
Trip planning is some what necessary but keeping the schedule can be stressful, we did a 6,000 mile/40 day trip this summer and I planned til I was blind going out to Oregon. FYI you have to plan ahead at the National Parks (several months out). We winged it on the way back east from CA and it was less stress cause we didn't have to be anyplace on time (campground reservations) and worry about losing the deposit. We definitely tried to see too many places but it was a great trip.
    Happy travels

I had a water filter built into a 5er a few years ago and didn't like it. Seemed like a lot of trouble with leakage and winterizing. One friend uses a filter at the spigot and another uses a kitchen filter. Your choice, I guess but in several years of RV'ing I really have not seen the need. However, we only use the water for bathing and dish washing. I always sanitize the dishes with boiling water and we only drink and cook with bottled water (do that at home also.)

In our years we have used a filter. Last trailer had one built in and was difficult to get to. previous to that i used the inline one and now in line as well. I hook mine up at he spigot end protecting the hose as well. Keep in mind the filter is not going to save you from all contaminants, but will sure help and will also keep sand and misc debris out of the water system in your coach. I also use a spray bottle with 10% bleach to 90% water to spray the hose spigot after flushing for a moment. I use the spray bottle to spray the hose ends as well. Using it helps prevent to the best of my ability the spread of any bacteria from the previous person or myself during storage etc. And lastly keep all hoses separate, keep them clean, wash your hands etc. Now i sound like my Mom. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
