Shenandoah Natl Pk and Asheville, NC Campground Recommendations

This May, my wife and I will be going up the East Coast to Virginia Beach and up to southern PA. On the way back down south to our home in Louisiana, we will come down the Appalachians to Asheville and then across TN and south. Wondering about good campgrounds in the vicinity of Shenandoah National Park and around Asheville NC (and any other great areas along the way).

Can't help you out for Shenandoah but would highly recommend Lake Powhatan Rec Area, part of the Pisgah NF just off the Blue Ridge Parkway on the outskirts of Asheville. Loop C are 50 FHU...only about half are reservable the rest are walk ups. We've stayed 2 weeks each the last 2 year and will be there again in May. That area is also a mountain biker's heaven.

We spent a week in Shenandoah Valley campground in Verona, Virginia a few years ago. Nice campground, right on a river with a little water fall. I recommend it.

Bear Den Campground right on the Blue Ridge Pkwy is nice. A little North of Asheville, close to Linville Falls/Gorge and Grandfather Mountain, both worth visiting. Haven't been there yet, but going for Christmas this year, Mama Gerties outside Asheville looks really nice.

Shenandoah River State Park. It's a short drive from the north entrance to Skyline Drive. Nice spaced out sites with water and electric. Some nice trails along the Shenandoah River.

Rob...have you volunteered for Cradle of Forestry before? We've camped at another place they had the contract with (subsequently lost) that we really liked...Grindstone in the Mt Rogers Rec Area. Unfortunately it's in quite an isolated area of VA.
