Estes Park - Rocky Mountain National Park
Our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson want to go to the Rockies this summer. We have reservations at Golden Gate Canyon SP for a few days to tour the area west from Denver and plan to spend a few days farther north in the Estes Park area as well.
What recommendations are out here from our forum folks on where to consider staying in the Estes Park area ?
Thanks, DanDan & Carol

We visited Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park last summer. We stayed at Elk Meadow Lodge and RV Resort. It's a nice park that will accommodate larger rigs. It is just a few blocks from the entrance to the national park. If you make a reservation there, give them a call for the best directions. You want to avoid going through the center of Estes Park with your rig because the streets are narrow and it's very difficult to negotiate some of the turns with a long trailer in tow.

We, also, were at Elk Meadow RV Park last summer. Nice park and, in my opinion, the nicest in Estes. So much to do and see. Just a word of advice tho. The park is pretty old and the asphalt has long disappeared and has given way to dirt roads and pads. If you stay in row "G" you get some remnants of asphalt and you miss the in and out of trucks and rigs that stir up the dust - and there is a lot of that. But the sites are wide and the livin' is easy. We stayed 10 days and would start our morning with a brisk walk down to "Coffee On the Rocks" for breakfast (3 miles round trip). If you do that, be prepared to see herds of Elk as they meander through the town, across streets and into the adjacent large fields. We saw cow Elk and their calves every morning. RMNP is the best for hiking and exploring -beautiful country that is for sure.

Dan, x2 what Jim said about the narrow streets in Estes Park (the main concern is Elkhorn Ave). I would add that Estes Park & Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) are very popular tourist destinations in the summer and parking in town & RMNP can be challenging at times. I can't advise on where to camp in the Estes Park area because we've never camped there. (We live in the Denver area and Estes/RMNP is a day-trip for us.)
Also, as I advised Steve (Rondaker) from Upstate NY a few days ago -
A couple of items to consider if you haven't been to the Rocky Mountains before:
1. Sunscreen! At the altitude here, the sun is brutal.
2. Water! The humidity here in Colorado is generally very low and you can get dehydrated quickly. The higher you go in altitude, the more pronounced the effect. Drink more fluids than you normally would.
3. Altitude sickness: Do an internet search on this problem. The elevation of Estes Park is 7,500 feet. The elevation at the Alpine Visitor Center in RMNP is almost 11,800 feet.
4. Weather: watch the skies. In the mountains, you can have beautiful blue skies in the morning, then thunderstorms can pop up quickly in the afternoon.

Jim/Rich/Dean & Cindy--appreciate the information. After doing some research, the very few RV spots to camp in Estes do not seem very highly rated regardless of the website sharing feedback. The lone exception, Paradise on the River is not only THE only very highly rated RV spot but #1 of nearly 80 specialty lodging sites........WOW !!!......looks very nice but too small to get into and park with even our 303 and P/U it seems. Will check it out when we are there to learn more, though.

Yepper, your running into the same thing we did. Paradise is very nice but it is limited to 32 ft and I think even that is pushing it. Safe travel....

Has anyone been to Estes Parks at Mary's Lake? I booked it online for my first trip to RMNP in June.
