27RL tow vehicle

I know I am gonna open a pandora's box but would like to know people are pulling the 27RL with?

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but I'm towing the 29RS (similar specs) with an 2012 F-150 Ecoboost, Supercrew, 5.5 foot bed, max trailer tow package. I've augmented with a custom engine/tranny tune, and extra suspension support (Timbren). Only had one outing, but it included 7% grades up the mountain, and she towed wonderfully.

Thanks thats what I was curious about if a diesel is needed or not.

Quite honestly it depends on the use. Lots versus occasional. We have a Ram 2500 Hemi 4x4 and our 29RS does nicely but if we were to travel long distances on a regular basis and through hilly terrain, a diesel would be the best option. Better mileage and torque. If you can, get yourself a diesel.

I would agree with the diesel assertions expressed here. What drove our F-150 decision was the fact that it is also a daily driver and we didn't want/need the extra size of the 3/4 or full ton pickups. The real deal breaker was that all the super duty pickups had contoured rear cab floors, making it awkward for our two rottweilers to travel. Our F-150 has a flat floor and with the seats folded up, it is pretty roomy. These factors drove our compromise. One other factor to consider is that the 5.5 foot bed meant we had exactly one hitch to work with, the Pullrite 3100, which is expensive. It works fantastic but it came at a premium.

I went from Ram 1500 4x4 hemi to Ram 2500 turbo diesel (Ram Limited 4x4 crew cab) for my 27RL and the difference in torque is amazing. Also the diesel is much quieter running down the road at freeway speeds. Very glad I went with the diesel.

Not to jack this thread but what about payload capacity, I assume the 27RL will have a pin weight of 2,000 lbs. Will a 3/4 ton handle the pin + passengers (2) + small gear? Most of the 4x4 3/4 ton trucks I see have a payload sticker of 2,100-2,200 lbs.

The 27rl according to GD website has a hitch weight of 1516# and GVWR of 9995#

Ford Super Duty F-250 6.7L diesel with camper package (upgraded springs). Pulls a 27RL perfectly in the mountains of Colorado (6, 7 and even 8% grades). Don't really know it is behind you.
