    Portable waste tank

    Hi everyone,
We are thinking about a portable waste tank. Since I'm new at this camping thing.... Does anyone have a preferred model & size? Is bigger better?

    Thanks in advance!

Bigger is better... Up to a point [emoji2] .

Bigger means fewer trips to the dump station, obviously. But you have to store it somewhere while on the road, and the larger models are a bit of a pain to lift and maneuver when empty.

I have a ~25 gallon one, and that's a compromise between ease of use and number of loads. It just fits in the pickup bed between the hitch and the rear gate. Forget the mfr. but it's the blue plastic one that most people have.

I have pondered this since we bought our 303RLS. With only the two of us, and the size of the grey water and black water tanks we don't thing we are going to need one. We don't have to worry about storage or cost for one....Only time will tell

    Jim,

See this related thread and particularly the pictures on post #11.
We carry the tote tank in the truck behind the hitch where it lives "permanently".
The other part is the pump that that means we never have to tow this tank.

    Hey Rob,

Thanks for the pictures! That is what I was hoping to do also! Do you use it for black & gray? What brand and size tank did you get? Are you satisfied with it?

    Thanks!

There are only the two of us also, but if you stay anywhere longer than 3 days and want to shower for those days, then trust me, you will need one. I bought the 18 gal Thetford SmartTote and have never been sorry I had it.

I've had mine for 5 years now and it's still clean as a whistle. I've never actually had to use it but every time I head out I feel the necessity to bring it along for insurance. Like Rob, and probably most others, it fits perfectly between my hitch and the tailgate. We have a 6 night dry camping stay this summer, which is probably our longest dry camping stay, so I'm pretty sure it will finally get used.

    Hi Jim,

Our tank is a Smart Tote 35 gallon (from Camping World . . . as is the pump)
It would work for black tank as well but I have never had to do this. By using campground washrooms when possible, the black tank will easily last two weeks or more.

Check the space from the back of your hitch to the closed tailgate before purchasing a tank. I had a discussion a while back with someone on this forum whose tank would not quite fit this space.

I made a few mods to our tank. I took off the hand/truck tow handle and replaced the narrow front wheels with a solid wide foot to be more stable when tied down in the truck. I also added an AAV (air admittance valve) like the ones in the RV. With the tank up in the truck and a 4" drain hose, the 3/4" hose connection air intake couldn't keep up. With the AAV, a full 35 gallons empties in about 20 seconds .

We are quite happy with this whole arrangement and don't have to stress about washing dishes or having bird bath showers.
