    Westlake Tire Observations

So, we have decided to stay with the 15" wheels and have upgraded to Maxxis tires. Same ST225/75R15 10 ply E rating as the original Westlakes. The new tires look great and took very little weight to balance.

My "observations" are really more about the removed Westlakes. These look great too. After 11,000 miles of bashing these over Interstate highways, they have no bulges, no interior evidence of damage, 7/32 even tread wear across all (new was 9/32). By their 4113 build date, they are coming up on three years old . . . so, conventional wisdom is that it is time to replace . . .

Just an FYI for those still running Westlakes.

Rob, thank you for the good information! I would offer to buy them if they fit my 16 inch wheels. I hope the Maxxis tires do truly end up being an upgrade!

Thanks Rob for the pic. Mine look about the same. I kept a close eye one them on the trip I just did to make sure they were not wearing strange after my 6k spring change. They looked good. Going out soon to measure loaded arch before 109 degrees today.

Thanks Rob, replacing mine will be a "winter" event. By then I will have 15-16,000 on mine (well the 3 originals that I still have). Did you keep the spare?

Did the same thing today, stayed with 15 inch rims and got the E rated Maxxis's. The guy at Discount Tires in Reno was impressed with the wear on the Westlakes. Good tread left and wearing even...... had about 12,000 miles on them and with a couple of trips coming up...including Yellowstone...I just decided to bite the bullet now. Changed my lug nuts out to one piece chrome ones too. Looks Great.

    Hi Mike,

I did get a 5th Maxxis tire, but am keeping the Westlake spare for now. My plan is to get a matching aluminum wheel and carry this as the spare with the Maxxis tire. I will then use a 5 tire rotation if I end up with any unusual wear to deal with.

BTW, similar to Brian's experience, the guy who changed out the tires for me asked why I was doing this, based on the good condition of the Westlakes.

Tire wear is not my concern on Westlakes. It's the sudden tire failure and tread peeling off and doing serious damage to the underside of my trailer and plastic fender flairs.

I switched to Bridgestone Duravis R250's as soon as my trailer got to my campground. And every time I put the tire chocks in, I'm downright proud to have them. I've yet to hear of any tire failure of Bridgestones, Michelins or Goodyear G614's on RV websites.

I bought another wheel when I switched to 14 ply tires. Spare was only rated 80 lbs.

My West Lakes didn't do so well. I had to blow outs in about 6 months, and I had them replaced while we were on our trip out west. Both blew on the interstate, one in NC and one in Arizona.
