I suspect the over temp / thermo sensor or the circuit board or maybe the fan is slowing down and not blowing enough air and causing the unit to trip the thermo sensor. A new fan assembly was about as much cost as getting a whole new unit. Just from my preliminary search model GR54FR is the same dimensions to fit the whole. Couldn't find either the original or the replacement model in stock. For the time being we went to Menards and bought an electric space heater.
Thermal fuses can cause alot of problems in electric fireplaces. Our 5er's still works great after 3+ yrs - we also use a ceramic space heater as well. But our Amantti fireplace at our lake home needed to have the thermal fuse/fan assembly replaced. Funny that they include a $10 part on a expensive circuit board or fan assembly in order to replace such a high maintenanced cheap part.

Marcy, you have a good point. That space in our 3350 is huge (deep) and the fireplace only takes up half of it. Storage space is a premium when fulltiming. The new electric floor heater has an oscillating back and forth feature to move the heated air around, better than the fireplace. We'll have to think about converting the space into storage.
