Fort Welikit Family Campground - Custer, SD

We just spent 6 days camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground just outside of Custer, SD. Full hookups. Great base camp for all the sight seeing we did around the area. Very near Custer, SD yet had a super country feel to it. Sooo many stars at night!

Simple campground. Very quiet! Everyone was out everyday on their scenic travels. It is a very nice place to spend your evenings. Deer and turkeys in the campground everyday. Has a fenced dog park and a small playground for the kids, horseshoe pits, grass volleyball area. Two restroom/shower houses - we didn't use them, but other reviews say they are nice/clean! Laundry available on site. Several tent areas available with overhead shelter, water and electric options.

    It's not an RV resort.
    • No pool (it was too cold while we were there anyway)

    • No paved roads within the camp, however well-maintained gravel roads. It is a hilly campground, but sites themselves are level. We didn't need levelers for the TT and were able to move the picnic table to a more level area of our site.

    • Not super close to the neighboring site, but not distant either (definitely better than most campgrounds we passed on the way down - some were barely big enough for a picnic table between each camper!). Big open area in the middle/behind of our loop of sites.

    • Wifi was available, but like most, the more people on it the slower it gets. We weren't there to be on the internet all day anyway.

Great location - close to all the tourist sites (in the 40 mile area) with many scenic drives in between. Everyday we were able to head out a different direction, different roads, to different sites. The prices were some of the best for the area (Veteran/Good Sam discounts available). Owners were very friendly and came around every day checking to make sure everything was okay. Veteran owned and operated.

New ownership in the last 4 years, and I believe they are doing a great job. If you want a resort, find a resort, but if you just need a simple quiet place to relax after a day of sightseeing, I recommend this one. We would definitely camp there again!

First travel trailer for us (Skipped a few upgrades!). Trying to find as much time as possible to get out and use it while working full time.

Was there several years ago. Met some great folks and had a wonderful stay. Great review of a quality campground.
