Okay so to add something else that I rarely admit to people--when we are forced to stay in a motel I take my own sheets and blankets!! I just can't bring myself to sleep in "those" beds! I would NEVER walk on the floors without my flips on. AND I always lay towels down on the couch or chairs! I just can't let my mind wonder too much.........! It's just too gross to think about!

Even though they gave us a "new" mattress it still felt like hundreds of others slept there before. The carpet was noticeably stained . We were in northern MI and the pools weren't even heated .

Next year we all camp. All but one has an RV...they can sleep on our lumpy fold out Lippert couch. Hehehe....revenge?

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that feels this way about hotels. The ick factor meter is pegged in certain situations and that is definitely one of them. I am even getting pretty picky about the restaurants that I will eat in. I have several friends that have been health inspectors and you don't even want to know.

About the only place that I am willing to stay in that is hotel-like is the cruise ships. And I even check their health inspections before I am willing to book on that ship. Then, I bring Lysol wipes to clean the room myself, ask for a freshly laundered bedding and am very careful where I touch and am constantly washing my hands. Been on numerous cruises and haven't been sick yet.

One more side note, after just spending hundreds in hotels on a recent Austin TX trip, noticed that the taxes alone per night were close to the cost of one night at a campground.
