Canadian boarder crossing and back to the US

I'm from Wetumpka Al and planning a trip to the NY Finger Lake area for the wineries. We will then be crossing the Canadian/US border at Buffalo NY and crossing Canada to the Sarnia Ontario crossing back into the US to go to Traverse City MI, wait for it, to visit the wineries! There will be an over niter in Grimsby Ontario. I imagine we will have 48 bottles of wine at that point. Will we have to pay duties on that wine going into Canada and then again coming back to the US. Has anyone done this.

You are allowed to bring two 750ml bottles of wine into Canada without having to pay duties and taxes. Here is a link to the details:

You might consider having the wineries ship the wine to you. It would be much less costly.

Shipping wine into Alabama is a good idea, just this backward state will not allow that, so the wineries will not ship it. Best I can tell is it would be a $1 a bottle going into Canada and If I purchase the wine in the US maybe coming back will be free. I'm going to call both border agencies and see.

When are you going on this trip? Right now there are a few construction areas you would go through. Crossing at Sania there is reconstruction on I 69 (1 lane in each direction) and a few spots on I 75 where it narrows to 1 or 2 lanes. (We just drove that stretch) I read these projects are going on through Nov. You may find it a much easier drive crossing further north at the Soo (Sault Ste Marie)

The reduced stress factor is well worth the extra miles to me. Time wise after sitting in several backups you'd likely break even or come out ahead.

Hi Patrick, John Joscelyne here. About 7 years ago we did a trip to Toronto and back to Niagara Falls (Canada' side). It was a car trip. We went to three different winery in Canada. We were told about the limit we were allowed to buy. Two bottles each in total 4. They also said the crossing guards have to fill out 7 pages of documents for each bottle over the limit. That didn't stop me though, we bought a case. Crossing guard (American side) got really upset when I declared that we had a case and showed him the recept. All most turned Red in the face. Anyway he let us go.
    Hope this may help.
Safe travels and good luck with your plans.
