Diesel engine oil filler cap
I need an opinion on driving without the cap on the oil fill neck of my F250 diesel. My last oil change was mid-December. Since then I've driven approx 2200 miles, of which was 1200 miles pulling our Solitude to Florida. Lately I've been smelling exhaust or oil while idling at a light. I popped the hood and find my oil fill cap missing and much oil splattered on the various components under the hood. Fortunately I find the cap resting in a nook by one of the resovoirs. My question is; what harm if any has happened to my engine while driving and towing? Thanks for any of the mechanics and learned friends out there that know something here.

Unless some bugs crawled in the only real damage is the mess. You didn't say what year your 250 is, but it probably has positive crankcase ventilation

I did this once on my F250 (460 gas) and no harm came to the engine. This truck was not a daily driver though and only used for a few short RV and boating trips. I changed the oil again and kept this truck for another 5 years. Was your oil level down on the dipstick?????

One saving grace on Ford diesels is that the injectors need oil pressure to send fuel into the engine, (not sure on the 6.7). If oil pressure is not there, the engine will not run!

I think that was the 6.0 engine that uses oil pressure to fire the injectors.

7.3's used oil pressure. You'll probably be okay if your oil level's fine.
