So now to find the best price on a 400P-RV. Any suggestions?
Well for several months I’ve been reading about how the 450p-RV was the best for trucks and RV’s. And I was going to buy soon. So now I need to rethink this.

Perhaps I am misreading the specs on VIAIR's page. https://www.viaircorp.com/rvs-portables/450p-rvs The fill rate on the 450 looks faster to me. At least for the larger tire; negligible difference on smaller.

The tables that list "RV TIRE FILL RATES" show the following:

    For the 450P-RVS:
    33″ RV TIRE (245/70R19.5): 90 to 110 PSI - 1 min. 59 sec. (±05 sec.)
    37″ RV TIRE (255/70R22.5): 90 to 110 PSI - 2 min. 15 sec. (±10 sec.)

    For the 400P-RVS:
    33″ RV TIRE (245/70R19.5): 90 to 110 PSI - 1 min. 55 sec. (± 05 sec.)
    37″ RV TIRE (255/70R22.5): 90 to 110 PSI - 3 min. 25 sec. (± 10 sec.)

So this IS confusing ? And to add another wrinkle, there is a 400pA-RV model out there that is more expensive than both? wonder what the A does to the package?

Marketing seems to be the thing for the -RVS models.
"VIAIR’s four RVS Tire Inflator models are exclusive for authorized RV Dealers, to be sold in their brick & mortar retail locations."

400P-RV 30 amps, more CFM for a 33% duty cycle than the 450P-RV 23 amps, 100% duty cycle.

    400P-RV P/N 40047 Automatic Compressor, Duty Cycle: 33% @ 100 PSI, Max. Working Pressure: 150 PSI, Max. Amp Draw: 30 Amps, 80 PSI 1.37 CFM, 110 PSI 1.11 CFM
    450P-RV P/N 45053 Automatic Compressor, Duty Cycle: 100% @ 100 PSI, Max. Working Pressure: 150 PSI, Max. Amp Draw: 23 Amps, 80 PSI 1.04 CFM, 110 PSI 0.90 CFM

All this tire pumping reminds me of a joke that can not be told here.

So should we shy away from the RV ones?

Does anyone know if the Viair 450p-RV or the Viair 400p-RV can directly plug into the 12v or do they have to be connected directly to the battery with alligator clips?

I would say no as they have a max load of 23A and 30A respectively. I don't think any of the 12V outlets that come standard on a vehicle are rated that high which is why the Viair's come with alligator clips and the instructions direct you to hook it to the battery.

We just purchased the 400-rv viair and it’s battery clips only. Love the unit.

So after all this thread and thanks for all the advice btw, I purchased the 400p-rv. I decided that I wanted the Viair that could fill up faster was more important for me even though it had less duty time.

Now my next question— perhaps overthinking— but since I have to connect with the clips to a battery, does it matter on my F350 which battery I use— the battery on drivers side or the battery on passenger side? Or doesn’t matter?

It doesn't matter. Before I set it up in my trailer's battery compartment more or less permanently, I used both batteries, choosing more or less randomly which one to use for a particular filling.
