My wife bought this battery-powered red-LED alarm clock and used 3M Command strips to mount it high (almost to the ceiling) on the wall at the foot of the bed. Takes two AA batteries that last a long time. It includes an auto-dimming feature and it doesn't cast very much light while we sleep. And, as you require, I'm able to glance at the clock with my eyes barely open to see the time. :-)

Being night bathroom visitors, we purchased a simple, inexpensive Capello clock....,,you touch the top of it and only then does it light up to display the date and time. No light unless you want it. It is an alarm clock, too, but being retired..,,,,we haven’t used it!

Our two cents...
1. When I happen to have a morning when I don't have a service call but I don't dare NOT answer my phone if the boss calls...I don't set an alarm, but I put my phone on vibrate and put it under my pillow. Its is easily heard through the pillow without disturbing my wife, Its also easy to locate to read the time.
2. We also have a projection clock. The time is easily read on the ceiling but the projector brightness is not adjustable. My wife complains it is too bright (I don't understand how she can know it is too bright while she is snoring)?
That was both cents!
