    History of the 5th wheel

While piddling around on a news app today I came across a 1972 model 5th which was designed
to be pulled by a full sized 72 sedan. The hitch was on the roof of the car, partially attached to
the cars drip rail and something else I hope. Did not sell due to in car casualties in a crash and
many other factors. TT had green shag carpet (I remember the color).

When did the 5th become a viable alternative to bumper pulls?

p.s. A picture is available on FB but I am not a user.

Yep, the basic premise of the 5th wheel is now a century old! Curtiss was well ahead of his time, and in recent years a pair of his early 20s trailers surfaced (one with original tow car) from being lost in time! There are also several 30s-era Aerocar survivors that have been restored, and one WITH the original tractor that is regularly camped (or was 5 years ago when I last saw it and the owner)!

I was reading about the Volo Museum which has 2 of only 6 was produced in 1932 and 1934.
They are not the Curtiss models I don't think.
The museum is close to Rockford Illinois.

Love that museum! Been three times and would probably have been again this year if not for things being shut down.

Thanks, we will put this on our list of places to visit, we love museums.
We were recently in the Union Ill area and missed the train museum there, it was closed
on our available day to visit.
    Thanks:
