Hard wired surge protector and warranty

Have any of you who have installed a hard wired surge protector looked into whether or not it will affect your warranty? I plan to contact the dealer tomorrow to ask the question, but thought I would throw it out here as well.

I have never read nor heard of the installation of a hardwired EMS (they're SO much more than a "surge protector") affecting the RV warranty. We've had PI hardwired EMSs in both of our fifth wheels. Both our dealer and Grand Design have known about it... never a mention of it.

Good to hear! Will report back what the dealer tells me after I talk to them.

We didn't even think about. We just put one in. It was the first thing my husband added to the rig.

Surge protectors are designed to be “sacrificial” because they are designed to give themselves up instead of damaging the unit. I use an external device and have had to have it replaced twice so far (living in Florida). Does your surge protector has a bypass? Lastly, it’s rare, but if you loose neutral, the surge suppressor will be damaged and need to be replaced.

Like @Second Chance said, I have never heard of it causing a problem with a warranty. Most of the coach is only a one or two year warranty anyway. The benefits of a power protector out weigh the negatives. Really there are no negatives. We have the hard wired Progressive Industries 50 amp. If I didn't have the hard wired model, I would have the external power post model. It has saved us damage from low power a number of times. It also works fine with our generator.

I agree with those here.... It was the first thing I installed when I got the trailer.
Never heard of anyone having a warranty problem.
My thought is that it helps protect the items in the coach from a potential claim. Overall, it's to their advantage, and you paid for it. Win-win.

    Wouldn't be without it.

+1 with all thats been said. We have the Hughes Autoformers PWD50-EPO. Plan on installing inside the basement permently. Would also recommend purchasing a replacement surge module if you decide on using this unit.

Never thought about it.. and as others have said, mine has been to the dealer with it installed, and they told me that was the best upgrade I could do.

My PI hardwired unit has saved me twice. Most notably this past weekend, with low power on L-2 of the 50Amp. I swapped to the 30 amp plug since I wasn't going to be running enough to worry about 50 Amp, and notified the campground.

This is likely my last/final RV, but if I ever buy another, adding the hardwired unit will occur immediately upon getting home.

If a dealer refuses warranty based on something you did, it is there responsibility to show it caused the problem. If you put in a surge protector it doesn't void your warranty on the rest of your rig.... They could make a case if the electric system fried from lose wires at the surge protector... Etc.

    This also applies to vehicles
