    1 brake heating up?

    hello to all. So. History.
    1. Noticed a weird wear on our rear axle tires after putting new tires on.
    2. Dexter approved a new axle install.
    3. Campers inn Installed a new axle. And cre300 wet bolts and shackles.
    4. Middle of the year we noticed a weird wear on our rear wheel, drivers sode.
    4. Grand design tech looked at it and told us that campers inn Installed the axle backwards? And that they used Dexter shackles on that one wheel.
    5. Dexter approved a new axle, grand design installed it at my house.
    6. Left CT and went to National Rally. 30 min from national, 1 tire(rear wheel, drivers side) heated up about 25 degrees more than the other tires.
7 pulled over the drum was 278 degrees. Called GD tech was told to cut 1 wire and limp to national.
    8. At national, GD installed a new brake assembly.
    9. October 16th, brake heated up again, more than the others.

    Sorry for the long story.
    Does anyone have any thoughts.
Dexter is now coming out ,to install yet another brake assembly?

    Two thoughts...

Are all the other brakes working properly? (over working the hot one)

Is the bearing castle nut adjusted properly? (Too tight causing excessive heat) (Hopefully with the axle changes it's not this)

I too have some excessive wear and likely a bent axle. I’m heading to a shop in Tucson, recommended here on the form, that specializes in trailer suspension. I expect They will hook up the laser alignment stuff and get it right.

My experience is that GD dealers in general do not go beyond swapping suspension parts. Which usually works. But in your case, I would recommend taking your rig to a pro that can actually measure things (alignment) to determine the problem.

The brakes thing is a mystery. They are fairly simple to adjust. And the wiring is easy to test. Beyond the tech messing up I’m not sure what to say. Others with more knowledge will hopefully chime in.

Initial guess would be that the pads or magnet is out of adjustment. A good shop can put an ammeter on that brake line to see if it is pulling more current than the others (or you can if you have the skill - and the Dexter tech should be able to do it too). After the electrical test if all is OK then you know it is mechanical - likely parts being installed wrong or wrong parts being installed. Since it all started after the new tires maybe think about swapping that tire to a new position too; it could be just a bad tire. Last "initial thought" - is there any drag on that wheel/drum when it is off the ground and rotated - it would be a bummer to find out it is just a brake adjustment.

@FlyStar - taking the rig to a professional alignment shop is the best thing you can do - remove the guessing and have some pros get it right. I know we've covered this in a few other threads and saw that recommendation for the Tucson shop. For me it was the best $300 I spent (years ago - maybe more now). Be sure to let us know how it works out.

The tires had been through 3/4 or our season 6000 miles. The wheel spins freely, no drag. We did the wiring test already, all was fine.

Re set your brakes. Should be self adjusting but if one is too tight it will always work harder than the others.

    Can you elaborate a little?

How was the performance of the other brakes verified?

When the wiring was tested, was a current measurement made with the breakaway pin pulled?

When you noticed the tire being 25 degrees hotter, was this from a TPMS reading? Had you been braking prior to seeing the temperature rise on the tire or were you on the road at speed?
