Angry Grand Design & Deep Cycle battery delivered in new RV

When you picked up your new Grand Design RV, did it come with a new battery? We picked ours up in November 2018 and have only recently dewinterized and started camping. We just finished our 1st trip and hd to park it at a friends house as our street was being paved, I parked it, shut everything down and went home. It was at their place for 2 weeks while they paved. I went over to move it and found the battery stone cold dead. I thought it odd, but figured I must have left something on. I pulled the battery to bring home and charge it and noticed it looked really old. While the screw terminals were clean, the posts were corroded and the battery looked really old.

I brought it home, checked & filled fluid levels (all cells a little low), and put it on a charger for two days.

I brought the battery back to the camper, put it back in and hit the disconnect switch.

The next day the battery was stone cold dead again.

I'm kind of pissed that I may need to spend $200+ for a battery 6 months after taking delivery of a damn expensive 5th wheel.

Does anyone know if the battery a dealer or factory installed item?

The dealer installs the battery (or batteries in some cases). The disconnect switch does not disconnect everything. There are still a few items that will draw power even with the switch off. If you're going to store the RV for more than a couple weeks, you should disconnect the battery.

Batteries have date codes on them.

Here’s instructions for identifying date code for Interstare Battery which most dealers install.

You can’t leave it for two weeks with no shore power without the battery being dead. Even with the disconnect off, a few things still draw power.

Take the battery to an auto parts (most of them will load test it for free). If it has a dead cell, take it back to the dealership and get a new battery. It should be under warranty unless they put a used battery in there. What's the date on the battery?

    Hi John (or Kathy),

While this seems to be the case with the majority of GD RV’s, maybe others, I found my disconnect switch appears to turn everything off. Call me lucky, or whatever, but I am able to leave mine for weeks, probably months without it discharging. I’ve tested it several times. Having said that, I still plug it in to charge at least once a month. If I had a disconnect switch that acted like most reported, I likely would have put in a separate disconnect switch.

Have you looked at your propane and smoke detectors? My bet is those are left powered for liability/safety reasons.

Depending on how your particular RV is wired, here are some of the things that might still have power with your battery disconnect switch off.

    - CO2 and smoke detectors
    - Rear camera
    - Stereo (the clock will still display the time)
    - Hydraulic/electric jack system

Yes, smoke detector on ceiling run by battery only, and the Co2 light is off when coach battery is disconnected through the disconnect switch. There is no propane detector.
Stereo even goes off, nothing showing.

EDIT: Just got down on the floor after thinking about it, what I thought was the Co2 states is an RV smoke detector. Light still goes off though with battery disconnect switch off.
