    Weekend Adventure

Like many of us, we do other things than camp. This past weekend I did one of those with my step son. My late father-in-law built several dune buggies back in the late 60's and early 70's. When he passed in July, he wanted my step-son to have the one that he built for himself, so this weekend we went and recovered it. While that sound easy enough, the plates on the buggy expired in '88 and I suspect it had been "parked" where it was since the end of the season in '87. After first trying to winch it out sideways I used the "beast" to slowly pull it out where we could winch it up onto to my equipment trailer. After about 4 hours of work, we had it at my step-sons house. Next comes the job of the actual rebuilding. We hope to have it back on the road by next spring.

I've built and help build many of those old rail buggies. Mostly air cooled, but a few water pumpers

Wow David, is that a true Manx? I've always wanted one. It would be perfect here along the beach.

Bruce Meyers grew up in Southern California during the early days of surfing, drag racing, and hanging out at the beach. It was at Pismo Beach that Bruce first became acquainted with “dune buggies”. These “water pumpers” were crude and heavy, so Bruce took it upon himself to design a lightweight version that would be fun on the beach or in the wilderness of Baja. After modifying a VW Kombi bus with wide rims, called “Little Red Riding Bus”, Bruce used his expertise in boat building to design the first fiberglass-bodied dune buggy, the Meyers Manx. .

What a great project . . . and a great story to go with it. Thanks for sharing!
I know this diverges from the regular GDRV topics, but please keep us updated on project progress.
Like Paul . . . this is a vehicle that has been on my "wish list" forever . . . just never found the right one at the right time.

Poppy my Dad was a Meyers Manx dealer back in the '60s. The buggy pictured above is not a Manx but fiberglass buggies of any brand are getting increasingly rare. That one will be a great father/son project and should be a blast to drive.
