Momentum Water Tank Heater
Can someone explain how this works? Is it gas or electric? We have some bad weather coming, what does it safeguard?
Thanks

Not sure if you are referring to hot water or holding tank heaters. For hot water, if your plug in, you have the choice to heat your water via propane or the electric element. Some rigs come with tank heaters to prevent them from freezing.

Are you talking about water heater or tank heaters?
The water heater can run off of propane or 120v AC or both at the same time. It also (always) requires 12V DC for the control board.
If you are asking about the tank heaters, I am not sure what comes on the Momentum and it varies by product line, model year and possibly by year. On our Solitude, the tank heaters are 12V electric pads under each tank and run off of the batteries. We have a separate switch on the convenience panel for each tank (black, grey and fresh). We have two grey tanks and both heaters are ono one switch. Each heater draws around 5A when on (10A for the two grey tanks). If you are boondocking the heaters will draw down the batteries fairly quickly. Grand Design has told me (twice) that the heaters do not have a thermal switch, but mine at least seams to turn off/on around 35~45F (indicating they do have a thermal switch). The purpose is to help keep the liquid in the tanks from freezing.

Water tank heater. Not the hot water heater.
The Momentum has one option to engage it on the monitor panel.

I would love to see the specs on the tank heaters. I have 3 black, gray and fresh. That will help our rig keep from freezing up when it's just barely freezing.
I set the furnace to 35* and turn on the tank heaters if I don't blow out the water lines. It only gets down to around low 30's or maybe mid 20's. If it is going to get colder I would winterize.Backpacker and tent camper all my life, including BSA as a kid and adult.

Depending on how much liquid is in the tanks and how warm it gets during the day, it can take a long time at just below freezing or a shorter time and much below freezing to start freezing your tanks.
Have have to quotes in my notes from prior threads on this forum, but I can not find the original threads.
Discussion on Grand Design Owners Forum says “tank heaters are thermostatically controlled, turning on at 45 and shutting off at 67.”
and
GDOF 2016 Solitude owner says his do have switch. The pads are "ThermaHeat SL-ST725"
eTrailer has these with some specs (that match my experience).
I can not vouch for or deny the accuracy of these statements.
