Another thing I like about TN is that a regular driver's license is all you need to tow your trailer or drive something like a diesel pusher. My Dually and Momentum 394M combined weight is 29,xxx lbs......and a regular driver's license is all I need.

On a side note, regarding the property taxes....We moved here about 15 years ago. When we started looking for houses we were simply shocked at the real estate tax numbers. The house we bought, the taxes were about 1/3 of the taxes that I had been paying on a house that I owned in IL......and the house in TN was valued approx. 50% more than the house in IL. I thought that it was a typo on the ad for the house.......it wasn't!
In Florida with a regular DL you can drive ANY RV and any non commercial vehicle with a GVWR less than 26,000 lbs.

My F250 has the 6.7 / 3.55 and has a ton of extra power pulling our 9,000 lb. Imagine. I would say the 3.31 would have no problem with a 12,000 lb. 5er.
As for having the necessary payload capacity, a good ROT is that the pin weight is 20% of the total trailer weight.
So, 20% of the GVWR of the 303, added to what you are hauling in the truck, needs to be less than the yellow payload sticker on your truck. (11,995 x .2= 2399+ weight of "stuff" in your truck)
Another way to make an educated guess at how much 5er your truck can "legally" handle is to take the payload number for your truck and divide it by .2 then compare this number to the GVWR of the 5er you are considering.
My payload number is 2828 lb, so I would need to look at 5er's under 14,140 lb. GVWR

Where I use to live in California, the current sales tax is 10.25%. Where I live in Tennessee, it is 9.75%.

Tennessee born and raised! The only other state I would even consider residing in would be Texas!

    To the original question:

My 2014 F250 handles my 320MKS just fine and I think it is very close in specs to the 303. We were weighed at the last rally we attended and got all "thumbs up" on the numbers.

Because a 1/2-ton truck will not tow a 5th Wheel RV as well.

Meanwhile, as the discussion has swerved to annual vehicle registration fees, I am paying $74.25/year on my Ram 2500in New Yawk.

If you had a look at current specs for 3/4 ton trucks you would be able to answer your own question (and then stop sending the incorrect message to all the folks that look to this forum for guidance and advice).

I was thinking about how the trucks ride and perform. Since the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are almost identical in those respects, why not get a one ton, then you are ready when you upgrade your trailer?

Joe I agree! I’m on my 3rd 1 ton in 4 years and have 2 more on order.

The only time it wouldn’t make sense is if registration costs in your State are significantly different between 3/4 and 1 tone. Here in Florida there is no upcharge to register a 1 ton vs a 3/4 ton.

You are assuming that everyone has upgrading in their plans, whereas many folks have very clearly spec'd out what they want and today's 3/4 ton easily meets their requirements. Otherwise, everyone should buy a dually 'just in case'.

As far as the ride and performance, when doing my homework and 'fieldwork', I drove a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton back to back on the same route (without a trailer). Noticeably harsher ride. I have about 500 lbs. of excess payload with my 3/4 ton and trailer configuration, fully loaded. Why buy extra payload that is not needed and sacrifice ride quality. Similarly, a 1 ton weighs more yet has the same powertrain, thus the power to weight ratio is lower in the 1 ton. For many of us, looking to optimize ride and performance, the 3/4 ton clearly outperforms a 1 ton.
