When they downsized to 6.0 and 6.4, etc. it seemed they gave up on serious gas engines for towing. If they'd make a powerful gas engine by today's standards I'd seriously consider getting one. Maybe Chevy is going to get serious with their new 2020 gas engine, but no idea what that's going to be yet.
I recently sold my 1999 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban with the 454 and 4.10 rear end. I was never impressed with its towing capabilities. Only 290 HP and 410 lb-ft. Moved on to the Duramax with no intention of looking back.

Agreed. I would never compare an old 454 to a Duramax, just like I wouldn't compare the old 6.5 Chevy diesel to today's Duramax. My point was that back then, in that era, the Big Three made some gassers that for their time were good pullers. If they would make some serious big block gassers by today's standards I'd consider one just for the initial cost savings of a $9,000 engine and then the ongoing maintenance savings.

Let us know how those 3.31 gears work out for towing. I also like to add stuff like side rails aftermarket and not include in retail price of the truck. Saves money.

It tows fine. My previous 2017 F350 SRW Diesel had 3.55 gears and 18” tires. The 2019 has 3.31 gears and 18” tires and there’s no difference I can sense. At 65 MPH I’m turning 1500 rpm in 6th gear vs 1600 rpm with the 3.55s. At that rpm I still have 900+lbs of torque. Torque peaks around 1630 rpm.

    Here’s the 3.31 gears ar 65 mph

My 2017 F350 is running the 3.31's with 18" tires. For the most part the truck doesn't know the 303 is behind it. What most people don't realize is that the 20" tires spec'ed by ford are a larger diameter. As such the "standard tires" on the lariat, king ranch, platinum, etc. that come with the 3.55 and 20" tires works out to about the same as the 3.31 with 18".

Do you tow the 377mbs with the 2500 ram? Any problems? Reason I ask is I own the same truck you do and have been told I. cant pull a 303rls with it. The 303rls has a lot less weight than the 377mbs.

My Ford 6.7L Diesel w/3.31 and 18” tires will downshift occasionally from 6th to 5th when going up grades towing 14000 lbs at 65 MPH. My 2017 w/3.55 and 18” tires also did this. If I see I’m coming to a hill I will manually lock out 6th gear before going up the hill.

At 65 MPH in 6th gear rpm is about 1500 rpm. If I manually downshift to 5th RPM jumps to around 2000 RPM.
