Question Durango - Albuquerque- Colorado Springs

Looking for a mountain-pass free drive - to get from Durango to Colorado Springs/ Cheyenne Mountain SP.
550 south through Cuba down to I-25- then up to our destination.
Any surprises along that route? Solitude is 13’ 4” high and 35’ long.
Will probably take it slow - 3 nights - until our next reserved site in Cheyenne Mtn. Suggestions?

    Thanks!!!

Hey Cindy, if no one responds or looking for additional feedback, Keith @powerscol will probably have some good suggestions as a SW CO resident and long time poster.

    Thanks, in advance, Keith !

Wow, that's a really long drive just to avoid Wolf Creek pass.

We've driven over Wolf Creek pass both ways pulling a 40' toyhauler with a 2001 Dodge, and it really isn't that bad. Especially with what you're driving.

Just a note of caution... flattestroute.com can be misleading. It often shows grades of 10 - 15% that coincide with neither reality nor The Mountain Directory. I would recommend downloading a digital copy of The Mountain Directory (combined East/West version):

    https://mountaindirectory.com/ebooks/

I have found this to be much more useful with its maps and text descriptions - lots more information.

What Hoopy Frood said. Done Wolf Creek both ways with previous 5th wheel. You've enough truck to handle it easily. Unless you really, really want to see what's along your proposed route.

We've also done Wolf Creek Pass with no trouble at all. Actually it is a nice ride along US160. I'd suggest breaking the trip up into 2 days and stopping near/in Alamosa and visiting Great Sand Dunes NP.

I guess I should have just left the mountain pass off my post
We don’t plan on going over the pass- and would enjoy a leisurely drive around the Albuquerque and Santa Fe regions. We understand many drive the pass - so have any of you driven the 550 drive south to the areas I mentioned? Cool stuff to see along that route?

Was just out that way last year staying in Pagosa Springs visiting family. No, we did not take the route you're asking for information on but would like to suggest a great place to stop for breakfast in the event you do decide to take 160. A little bakery by the name of "Don Tomas' in Monte Vista (160 runs right through it). The pastries there are fresh and literally melt in your mouth with each bite. They are well known for their breakfast burritos but we can only speak for the pastries. Next time, we will try their burritos too.

We've driven south from Cuba to I-25. Can't recall it being anything to go out of my way for. Especially when one can travel US160 and see so many beautiful sights.

Just in case you didn't know (or didn't travel) it.... US550 north of Durango to Ouray is a wonderful drive - just don't dare do it pulling you rig! And the Durango - Silverton railroad is tons of fun too.
